I have searched for AR15.com for opinions on BCGs, but could not find what I wanted.  I just ordered a AR and want to get a spare BCG.  First, are all parts compatible within the AR-15 platform, specifically BCG compatible?  Second, who makes a good BCG, one that is properly staked, good qulaity, etc?

thanks guys

As long as you AR is within spec, then any BCG will work.  I would go with a BCM,: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Bolt-Carrier-Group-MPI-Auto-M16-p/bcm%20bolt%20carrier%20group%20auto%20mp.htm

does it matter if I get a auto BCG or must I get a semi?

It doesn't matter. Auto carriers are 100% legal in an a semi-auto AR.

I picked up a  LMT BCG the other day for $112.50 delivered from Denny's.  It will be either a back up for my carbine or the beginning of my second rifle!

I would get the BCM.

On an existing upper, can you replace the BCG as a swapout?
Old one out, new one in?

Yes, as long as your rifle is in spec. I got three BCGs between two uppers and they all swap fine.

Colt or BCM.  The BCM is probably the best value out there.

Hate to sound like a parrot, but BCM is a screaming deal for the quality of BCG they offer.

BCM Ion Bond. You'll come to really appreciate the advantages. I run 3 right now, and wouldn't consider another make or finish unless they became unavailable (they do, occasionally). If you don't want to spend the $ for the Ion Bond, you still can't beat a BCM BCG with stock finish.

And BTW, the enhanced LMT bolt is different- not a typical AR-15 type bolt. It will fit in in-spec AR-15s, but the extractor is different- not interchangeable with other brands of extractors. You can just stick with the standard LMT bolt, and you'll be fine.

Have 2 BCM, just noticed they are Ion bonded. they are spares for my 3 Colts and Armalite SPR. Ran both for just over 200 rounds cleaned up and put up as spares.

Colts are GTG/as good but hard to beat BCM..

I like the BCM bolts and carriers.
I (like many here ) resisted the idea that my stuff just wasn't "as good" as any other parts.
After reading the Pat Rogers thread and the thinking of several other knowledgeable members on this
site, I changed my thinking.
I am in the process of switching all my bolt carriers and bolts out to BCM.
I have gotten rid of all my A.R.M.S. mounts.
Thank you Mr. LaRue
I'm getting rid of my ARMS BUIS (only one left) and replacing with the Troy BUIS (mine are marked BCM or LaRue)
I have stopped thinking about what's cheap and am trying to learn and buy only quality.
Just my 2cents

what are the biggest differences in a semi-auto and full auto BCG and how can you tell aesthetically?

FYI as you can see in the pictures, the M16 carrier has some extra metal in two places which makes it weigh a little more. Some believe that this increases reliability as well as makes for a smoother shooting rifle.
