Im interested in making my AR15 more reliable and less "picky" with different ammo. Im wondering if an extractor upgrade will help. Also the BCM upgrade kit comes with a "black extractor insert" which is NOT the O ring but something else, what is this and where does it go in the bolt? Does anyone have any experience with this upgrade? How much of a difference can it make? Im shooting a complete DPMS A3 Lite .223/5.56  (I can hear the calm before the storm...please don't rant and rave about how DPMS blows...i just want to know if this upgrade has any pros/cons)

Thanks!

I got this kit because my gun wasnt extracting/ejecting empty casings.  Its comes with a heavy duty spring, black insert and an o-ring.  All three parts go under the extractor claw on the bolt. The claw is easily removed by some downward pressure and the removal of a small pin. The old spring is easily removed with a needle nose plyers and a twist.  New spring will push in and pop into place, black insert goes inside the spring and o=ring goes around the spring.  Getting the extractor claw back on can be tough, I used a plyers and a cloth to push it down far enough to get the pin back in.  Its pretty simple, and it fixed my problem immediately.  The worst thing about it was that shipping was about $10 for a $5 kit that could be mailed in an envelope with one stamp.  It worked well for me, not sure what it will do to help with your gun being picky with ammo, that sounds more like a like a feed problem than and extractor issue.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info! So the extractor insert slides INSIDE the new heavy duty spring? Because of the upgrade do you have a lot less FTE problems? When i said my gun can be picky with certain ammo, i meant some ammo fails to extract, and that is typically the only problem, but a big one. Thanks again!

Oh yeah, totally fixed the extraction problems.  I think the factory spring and blue insert on my bushmaster were just worn out after about 1500 rounds.  Got the upgrade kit and no problems since. I personally think the O-ring does way more than the silicone insert.  Either way, it fixed the problem.

So well worth the 5$ huh? Failure to extract is the only problem i have ever had with my AR, so i take it this is the best way to combat that problem.

Not the best photo, but you can see that the black insert goes inside the spring, wide end down. The spring shown is the current Colt part.  The BCM is a good kit, but the o-ring probably will not be needed, since it includes an extra power spring.

Yes.

The spring and black insert should be all you need, even my 10.3" mk18 clone didnt need the o ring

My Noveske came with the O ring and there was Brass Smear on the bolt face and extractor. Too much extractor tension. The bravo stuff is real good. Just leave the o ring in the bag.
