Hello,

I bought this kit recently. I wonder if I needed it. I have a new DPMS AR. It had a black insert when I took it apart. I didn't see any difference by the look of the parts that were in there compared to the new kit.
Also what is the O-ring for? Where would I install that? I don't see 1 on there now.
I can swap the new kit to my Bushmaster if it's not needed.
Thanks

Do you have a Carbine, Mid-Length or Rifle Gas system on your AR?  From what I understand, the carbine can have rare, but more common than the others, extraction problems that improvements in the extractor could help prevent.  There are different strength springs and rubber/silicone inserts to help the extractor do its job better, the springs are different color to identify them.   Sorry I can't really answer you question, I hope that helps out a little bit understanding why there are upgrade kits out there.  If you do a search you may find the recommendations for the right color springs and inserts that help upgrade the extractor and exactly what configuration of AR could benefit from the extractor upgrade.

The o-ring goes around your extractor spring for added tension. From the BCM web-site:

The BCM Extractor Spring is a heavy 5 coil design made for the increased extractor tension required on many AR15, M4, M16 short barreled rifles.  This product also inproves the reliability on a standard 16" and 14.5" carbines.

As with all BCM branded products, the highest quality is the primary focus.  Our BCM Extractor Spring is manufactured by a 9001:2000 facility employing the latest precision equipment.  BCM starts with only the highest quality chrome silicon material, heat treats to stress relieve the product and shot peens to add increased strength.

This kit also includes the new black extractor insert, standard on all M4, M4A1, Mk18 carbines and the recent new standard on M16A4 rifles.  The BCM Extractor Spring is so strong the Mil-Spec Crane O-Ring will probably not be needed, but it is included.

This kit includes:
- BCM Extractor Spring (chrome silicon, heat treated & stress relieved, shot peened)
- Crane Ind O-Ring (Mil-Spec)
- Black Extractor Insert

I only use the full BCM extractor spring upgrade kit on my carbine gas system AR.

On my other midlength (2.00" longer gas system than the carbine gas system) and rifle gas system ARs I only use the O-rings.

I didn't use the O-ring on my carbine right away until I fired about 600 rounds first without the O-ring, then after that I installed the O-ring around the extractor spring.

In my opinion the spring was too strong so I have to break it in first, after the spring break-in it runs great.

I would recommend the BCM extractor spring upgrade kit for all carbine gas systems also with M16 auto BCG, and H (heavy) carbine buffer for better reliability.

How about a 6.8 SPC- I don't know if it's compatable.  Anyone know?

Ok I understand the purpose of it. I guess the DPMS is a carbine with a 16" barrel & short hand guards?
My question I guess is how do I know if my DPMS needed it?  I didn't see any color springs.  The parts I took out of the DPMS look identical to the upgrade kit I got.
I think I'll try it without the o-ring 1st then add it & see how it goes.
All BC had was a 3 set kit in stock  So I will be also installing this on my bushmaster. It's an older used AR I'm sure it could benefit from the upgrade. This is a 20" barrel so that would be a full length gas system?

Thanks

You have a 16" carbine with carbine length gas system (i.e. not rifle, mid or pistol length). The parts in the BCM kit will be better than the extractor parts that came with your DMPS. The BCM kit will enhance your extractor strength. Only you can decide if you "need" to install the kit.

Ok I added the entire kit with the o-ring to my AR's. And fired away.
The casings eject with authority now.
Vast improvement.

Thanks
