Home Defense - Get a light

All around - Optic and/or sling

Sling before a light.  In an HD scenario without the sling the light could be turned on you.

Railed handguard if you don't have one. It will make mounting sling points lights and vert grips alot simpler.

Optic/sling combo for all around... Then railed handguards, grips, etc

Ammo. Best thing to make a rifle shoot better is more practice!

First thing to do with it is to decide what you want to do with it.  Upgrade from there.

Exactly.

If you are thinking of it as an HD/SD weapon:
Sling
Light
Aimpoint/Eotech

Fun little plinker:
RDS
Sling

Varminter:
Big Glass
Bipod

You can add anything you wish to those style builds, but that is my opinion on what you might want to look at before you get all glazed eyed and whip out your credit card and start buying extraneous kit.
