Where can I buy the BLACK extractor spring insert ?

I would like to know also 444. I want to get some Wolff extractor springs. They specifically say on their site that you need to use the black Colt widgets. I looked on the Colt site and didn't see them listed. I'm sure someone here will enlighten us.

The insert itself, other than color, is identical to the blue insert.  The color difference is to indicate that the SPRING that comes with the black insert is stronger.

But, even better are the Wolff springs.  Get a couple of those, and you're all set.

Where can Wolff extractor springs be bought?

I know you can get them at the Wolff site gunsprings.com, but I like to buy from site sponsors when possible.

Any dealers have them???

This is what it says on the Wolf web site:

EXTRACTOR SPRINGS - Extra Power
These very strong extractor springs eliminate the extraction problems which are very common in M4 models used extensively in law enforcement. Springs should be used in combination with the new BLACK extractor spring insert available from Colt. Springs also recommended for the M-16, AR-15 & Sporters.  Springs are unground and we do not recommend grinding them.

So where do you get them ?

Wolff has admitted this is a misprint on their web site and plan to correct it.  Give them a call if you want to verify this.

Troy is correct the black insert is just for spring ID purposes.

If you really want the black inser I believe the only way to get them is to order the extra power springs from a Colt dealer.

Ok, far be it from me to dispute anything Troy said. I have asked myself this very question everytime I remove my extractor. "What is this whole color thing all about" ? Now I know.

Wolff is as wrong about the inserts as you are. I have e mailed them twice about changing the message, but I guess they're too lazy; or, if they don't believe me, are too hard headed to pick up the phone, like I did, and call Colt to ask them.

Re the "as issued" recall on M16s with blue inserts;  that's riiiight----that's why the hell they pack the black inserts with the stonger springs---so they know which as issued pieces NEED THE NEW SPRINGS.  DUUUH.

Bust your hump for the black inserts if you want to. Whatever makes you happy[:D]

Dude, c'mon, everyone knows that black plastic is waaaaaay better than blue plastic. I pity all of you who have the inferior blue inserts! Hahahahaha [rofl2]

In all seriousness, the inserts themselves are the same. The color difference is only to ID the stronger spring is being used.

[#11]
So do you need ANY insert or is only something put there to identify what spring you are using ?
4/14/2003 8:51:32 PM EDT
[#12]
Yes.  The insert adds strength beyond what the spring can and lasts longer.  The spring allows more range of motion, though, which is necessary.  It's a progressive setup.

I went to the Specialized Armament website and they had the black insert. They were a buck a piece. The minimum order was $50, so I ordered 50 of them. No serious operator should be without at least 50.

LOL, 50...       stuff them all in your ergo combat trap door grip, heheh.   I would also carry 68 firing pins on bandoliers just in case : )

Thanks Troy for clearing that up for me. I'm gonna get some springs now that I don't have to mess with the widget problem.

Yeah what he said!  The black ones are the TACTICAL version.  If you have to ask how to get one then you're not HIGHSPEED enough to own one... [rofl2][rofl2][rofl2]

" If you have to ask how to get one then you're not HIGHSPEED enough to own one... "

That is where you are wrong. Owning one, MAKES you highspeed.

Owning 50, is supersonic.

My bad, you're totally correct.

With the gear come the skills, with the gear come the skills... Come on now repeat after me![rofl2]

Now we are talking about skills. Before you were talking about speed. Speed comes with extractor inserts. I am not sure if the skills come with a small part like an extractor insert, although for a few of the gifted they might. For most of us mere mortals, we need a bigger part for the skills. A flashlight, or maybe even a vertical foregrip will usually do it. Of course we all know that the real path to success is a pre-ban rifle. There is no shorter route to skills than having a bayonet lug and a real honest to god flash suppressor. But then you knew that, it is a given.

Maybe Shawn at Cav Arms can make inserts in all the cool colors.  I'd like a yellow insert to go with my yellow furiture.  The Armalite guys would snap up green inserts for sure!

Listen, I'm old enough that my first AR had a WHITE insert, which was indeed softer than the blue one; and the reason that the blue one was made blue in the first place[:D]

It may also be at least part of the reason that when Colt changed the color again, we all thought that the color change to black meant a still stiffer insert.  I know I did.

When I found out that the parts supplier wanted a $50 minimum order is why I called Colt in the first place; to find out if I could get it directly from them or some other supplier---and that's when I got the info about the black and blue being the same[:D]

Glad to read that Wolff Springs did finally get the message that the inserts are the same. I was beginning to wonder.

I just stopped Brownells, in Montezuma, Iowa, yesterday and picked up a 3-pack of the wolf extractor springs for $7.33.  W/O C&R or FFL, they are $11.

For .50 I doubt they are the original milspec "flat [b]tactical[/b] black" insert with "Q" marking on the left corner of the rear edge of the front side. It has to be one of those cheap copies thats is gloss black and with no "Q" marking!! [BD]
