I'm having one of these put on my barrel of my 16" AR. Due to me living in NY I can't have a suppressor. To those of you who have a Bushmaster Mini Y Comp my question is how do you like it? Was accuracy improved? Did it do what its suppose to do? Thanks.

The mini Y comp works well for what it was designed to do, does help control muzzle rise and recoil.
the only drawback is that they tend to be loud to those standing next to you since it directs the gasses back and to the side.
My wife has one on her rifle, and refers to it as the mini whine comp due to all the people crying about the noise.

I like mine.

Lots of people on this site hate them.

You won't know till you try one.

I'ts up to you.

I bought a Bushmaster that had one on it and sent it back because I disliked it so much. I couldn't even breathe because of the smoke that came back onto my face. So they switched it out for an AK brake and charged me $50.00 and this included a brand new heavy barrel because the tech guy said it would damage the exsisting one when the brake was removed. So even if you don't like yours, contact the tech department there and talk to them and see what they can do. I sat on the phone with one of the tech guys for twenty minutes discussing the mini-y and even he agreed that it's not the best of brakes and on top of that, he was very eager to make sure I was satisfied. He let me choose the brake I wanted and he even decided to upgrade my barrel from a light weight one to a heavy one because of some delays in getting light weight barrels in.  Bushmaster will always get my business because of their outstanding service.

You should try the IZZY brake, not as loud and just as good

I think I'm gonna tell my dealer to switch it to an Izzy Brake. Thanks for the info guys.

Huh? What? Speak up, I can't hear a damn thing. I'm deaf from standing near someone with a Mini Y Comp.

Izzy brake would be a better choice for you and the friends you shoot with, trust me.

I told my dealer to order me an Izzy brake instead. Thanks to all here who saved my hearing and my friends hearing.

Well I had mine removed by Kurt.

And, I am sorry I did.

Just the other day, Lumpy posted a pic of a Marine tanker with a mini-y on his battle rifle.

So, now that they're mil spec and that the Marines are using them, I want to put it back on.

I'm picking up my carbine tomorrow with the Izzy brake installed from my local gunsmith. I can't wait to take it to the range. I'll post back when I try it and thanks again for letting me know about the Mini Y Comp's loudness level.

Mini YComp, No recoil,,NONE! Where ear protection and the only noise will be the spring noise,,plus "NO" recoil!
Love it,,or,,hate,,it!

The IZZY brake is no where near as effective as the Mini-Y comp.  My shooting partner tried one during a match.  His times were off, and he complained about the "recoil" the whole time.  The Mini-Y comp was back on his gun by the next trip to the range.

It is impressive if you wear hearing protection!

There is NO recoil! and if you wear hearing protection you only hear the spring noise from the stock.  Everyone whom shoots the 223 with a Mini Y Comp is thrilled with it! It simply has NO recoil!

Try one on a 22-250.... big ole fat barrel, and the gun has no recoil at all. Sorta feel like the rifle pull away from me.

Work really well when run full auto.  7.5" pipe is lots of fun, the fire in your face, and blast across your face and top of head.

I'm going to have one bored to pass a 9mm bullet, and put it on a 6"  M11-9  barrel.

+1   The extra noise of my mini-Y doesn't bother me (or others since I'm not at a public range), works great at keeping my muzzle down and reducing the felt recoil (what little there is), but DAMN!....if the wind is right, you can really feel the chemicals burning your nose.  The powder seems to smell different (much worse) when it's blowing right back in your face.

Yes indeed - I had one on a postban when I was in NY
Not even noticeable noise with plugs - and NO backblast.

Had one on my Bushmaster...holy crap that thing was loud.

It's currently in ADCO's scrap heap somewhere after he took it off and put on a Phantom.

My bushy wears an AK style muzzle break and I have no complaints about it.  It does what its supposed to do .... keeps the muzzle down

Everyone I have shot with (including me) HATES the mini-Y comp as it's just too damn LOUD.  You can get other effective comps that don't generate that kind of noise.

There was a thread about how one could modify their Y-Comp so it wouldn't be so annoying, other than to remove it.  I think it involved opening up the ports a little more, but that may reduce its effectiveness (I'm not sure).

Drill .312" (5/16)  hole all the way through brake.

Opening up the inside diameter of the central chamber of the Y-comp will result in less gas being directed back at you.

As is, the hole is made at .25", which is pretty tight.

Bore out the hole with the brake OFF THE RIFLE.

What's the easiest way to take the break off your rifle if it's perm attached?
12/15/2004 8:04:38 PM EDT
[#29]
You basically have to destroy it to take it off.

I wouldn't bother with it if your brake is perm attach; the horrible effects of this brake have never bothered me a bit. I guess I'm too busy concentrating on proper shooting technique to be scared...

My gunsmith reccomended it to me and I was gonna try it because I have a couple extra mini-Ys and was curious; I will post my results once I shoot 'em side by side.

My mini Y is deafening.  Painful for you and the people around you.  If someone breaks in, I'm going to fire a round by his ear.  That would have to be more painful than shooting him.

I love mine, its loud, but virtually no muzzle movement at all.   Who cares about how loud it is anyway?  You should all be wearing ear protection anyway..........

Loud, wind blast from the hip, and the smell of burnt powder, one must learn to appreaciate the small things in life.

Call me masochistic but I like em but then I shoot rifles that'll bruise your shoulder too!

My mini-Y will be replaced by a Phantom within the next week or so.  Anybody know how much that will quieten my thunder-stick?  I'm guessing it will be a lot quieter on the trigger end.
