I noticed at Bravo Company they offer 4 different carbine buffers... std, H, H2, H3.  Please explain the purpose of heavier buffers.  Thanks

Hi, and welcome to AR15.com (as I see you're relatively new, post-count but not time-wise).

Heavier buffers keep the bolt locked for slightly longer and they slow down the rate of fire on full-auto.  They take more force to push back, and they slam the bolt home with more force too.  They are typically only needed on problematic builds (like very short barrels) for semi-auto.

Here's a picture Randall @ AR15barrels.com made with the weights of the buffers out of their buffer bodies (more tungsten = more weight):

On all of my builds, the standard carbine buffer works fine.  The only exceptions are my 9mm ARs - they need a much heavier 9mm buffer to keep the bolt in battery and to help control the recoil.
