I have decided to start piecing together an AR using the Dolos barrel nut system. My main goal is to have a compact carbine style rifle that is easily carried in my truck. With my job I am fortunate to walk a LOT of fields each year, and varmint hunting will be very good. I have been looking very heavily at either Wilson Combat or RRA for the Upper/Lower group. My trouble however, lies in the fact that I can't decide on a caliber. I have been leaning towards 40 S&W for the fact that it is a blowback action, no gas tube, makes it very easy to carry without things getting messed up. My carry gun is also a 40, making ammo a lot easier to carry. However, when you think Varmint gun, 40 isn't the first thing that comes to mind...
I am looking for a caliber that will be good for groundhogs to coyotes; so, no rimfire (had an M&P 15-22, loved it, wasn't for me). I want a centerfire that will be in the dirt within 3-400 yards (not exactly big fields in OH) and I want it to be able to work with the Dolos. I would really prefer something other than the normal 223 as I like oddballs like 6mm Remington, 22 Hornet and 45-70 Govt. 30 Carbine? 45 ACP? Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks, King |
| The AR is already a take-down design; do you really want to get into expensive proprietary parts to make is 6" shorter? IMO, you'll come out ahead in many ways to instead do an SBR with an upper that is roughly the same length as your lower, 15"-16" if we're talking a carbine stock collapsed. An 8"-10" barrel with a mini comp is going to be right there. |

pic your caliber first. you're wise to consolidate calibers. 40 would be nice. also 45acp
If you load then 300blk and roll some subs. Pistol or Rifle Build? If you build a pistol you can have it ready to go. Rifle in a backpack you have to place you upper back on your lower while that yote is in a full spring the other way. |

@RDTCU: The ASR is actually what got me thinking in this entire direction in the first place. However, and by no means do I have anything against TNW, I decided against that route for customization purposes. I was looking to be able to build something that felt a little more my own. And to be honest, I really do still like the looks and function of the ASR and will have to own one some day.
@Sixtysixduece/Fireball: I hadn't given much thought to the SBR or Pistol builds in all honesty. I'm not sure what all I would have to do there to make sure I am legal in Ohio. What kind of accuracy/ could I expect to get out of an AR pistol build? Thanks so far for all the other thoughts and ideas! King |

What kind of accuracy/ could I expect to get out of an AR pistol build? Mechanically, the same as a rifle with a barrel of similar quality. Barrel length in and of itself only affects velocity (and sight radius if using irons), and velocity only affects accuracy to the degree that time of flight allows the environment to act on the bullet (lower velocity = longer TOF to target = more time for gravity and wind to act on bullet). That's why higher velocity rounds and bullets with higher ballistic coefficient stray less from POA at any given distance; gravity and wind cause the bullet to fall/drift the same distance in the same amount of time, it's just that the bullet spends less time in flight. |
