Some of you might remember the A1 style .22 LR carbine I built my son many years ago. It was the first of my Mattel builds and I used his DOB for the serial number.
Over time he has grown (a LOT...now at 6"3" and a 170 pounds) and the carbine has followed his growth and transitioned into something he wanted. For a while now it has been a fixed stock M4 (call out to Morg) with red dot style carbine. Not exactly my style, but it is his gun not mine. A month ago I picked up a SP1 barrel assembly for a good price. Did not feel the need to build another A1, but could not turn it down. As things turned out I did some trading with another long time retro forum member and ended up with a project 603 receiver. A bit of elbow grease and some Norrels Socom black and it looks like new. The benefactor of all this is again my son. Not only does he have his M4 clone " />

Here ya go. As a bit of retro forum trivia, this Mattel 80% was one (if not the first) of "Bracemans" contribution to the retro world. The roll mark is a copy of the one that had been floating around the internet for years. On my later ones I changed the roll mark to look more like a real issued gun. http://<a href=http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/y345/fastswift1/IMG_4192.jpg</a>" /> Quoted:

Ok...since you have a personal interest. (Now I am embarrassed since I took the first picture of he right side to hide the fact I did not have a FA or cover http://<a href=http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/y345/fastswift1/IMG_4193.jpg</a>" /> http://<a href=http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/y345/fastswift1/IMG_4194.jpg</a>" /> Quoted:

How about some close ups of that upper? Ok...since you have a personal interest. I'm glad to see someone getting good use out of it. That upper was rough when I got it, I lightly polished a lot of the flaws out. I really am ashamed to admit what a paid for it, I got raped.
ETA: Did you keep the aperture or swap it out? |

ETA: Did you keep the aperture or swap it out? Oh I kept it - I am a fan of the A2 aperture. It took a few hours of soaking in paint remover, some real lite blasting in my cabinet to make sure I got all the paint removed and a green 3M pad to smooth out the blasting marks. Did not heat up the receiver much before I sprayed the Norrells so I would get a glossier finish. Kind of nerve racking since I had to go many light coats so it did not build up and run. Baked at 350 for 1.5 hours to cure it. I love projects like that! Only issue was that I had a bunch of my wife's students in my shop working on their Rube Goldberg device so I kept getting interrupted.
