I went to do a swap out from a commercial buffer tube / stock to a mil spec buffer tube / stock.  To my surprise the existing receiver nut is on backwards (or at least its backwards from every other AR I've ever seen).

It's the newer style castle nut with the square notches. I always thought the openings of the notches should face out towards the buttstock, this one has the openings facing in towards the receiver.  The problem this caused for me is that my armorer’s wrench won't fit over the dam thing now because I can’t slide it into the slots.  Anybody have any trick to get this thing off? Or am I just missing something due to in-experience?

Thanks

A pipe wrench will work.  Wrapping the castle nut in electrical tape will reduce the scratches you put in it.

Get one of the DPMS stock wrenches. They are stamped steel and will fit in the castle nut. I think mine was 4 or 5 bucks.

Might this be an Oly Arms?  I've seen recent ones that are on backwards, have no provisions for staking, but have the old Colt style small hole in the nut that requires a different wrench.  A strap wrench may work, or the old hammer and screwdriver/punch method.

Some notches face the receiver, this is so you can stake the endplate...

Thanks for all the replies guys. Very helpful as always.

I was thinking about going the pipe wrench route but was worried about gashes. The electrical tape is a great idea.

To answer your question Eric, yes it is a newer Oly lower.  I left that part out because I didn't want to get flamed about it (not that anyone on here would do that )...I know the stories about Oly, but I've used older ones before and never had problems. Besides, for what I'm using it for I didn't see a problem.

Now that I look close, it does have the old CAR style small hole on the bottom of the nut.  I may have to take jwb211's advice and get one of those wrenches from DPMS.  The wrench I have is the combination armorer's wrench with the three "teeth" that bushmaster sells.

Thanks for the comment about staking 87GN, I don't know anything about staking other than a lot of people one here say to do it.  So I will have to look into that.  I guess if I wanted to stake it, its in the right place, but I don't want to do that right now as I am trying to replace the buffer tube / stock.

Thanks,

You can get a strap wrench like these at Lowe's, Home Depot, pretty much any hardware store.  Prolly cheaper than ordering a special wrench and paying shipping and waiting by the mailbox, fingers crossed...

Thanks, a strap wrench is also a great idea.

Sometimes I get AR tunnel vison when dealing with these things and forget that regular old tools can also do the trick.  It might be easier for my wife to buy the story that I need a new tool instead of "something else for that damn gun" :)

Sounds like your wife and mine would be pals...
