Over the weekend I bought 3 PMAGs at a gun show, only paid $12.50 each. Anyways, last night I was running them through my lower, brand new DPMS with a RRA LPK installed be myself. Each mag was a tight fit at first but after about 15 to 20 times in and out they would drop free, no big deal brand new mags brand new magwel I expected them to fit tight.
With on mag in particular though I started to notice that when I'd slam it home after inserting it that it would travel far enough into the magwel to engage the bolt release. Again not that big of a deal because the mag was empty so I expected it too. But it just didn't feel right, it felt like there was a lot of resistance. So I loaded it up with a few of the Magpul poly rounds. Ran the mag a few more times and this time I noticed that the mag was engaging the bolt release before I'd slam it home with rounds in it. Pulled the mag and gave it real good inspection, I found this. M8 is a "good" mag M7 is the mag in question http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/TheWhiteLion777/Photographs/SAM_0003_4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/TheWhiteLion777/Photographs/SAM_0010_12.jpg None of my other mags have that "sheered mag catch lip" but you'll notice that M8 does show some wear in the same place. I thought maybe the mag catch was sharp or deformed some how but I don't think it is. This is looking up through the magwel http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/TheWhiteLion777/Photographs/SAM_0009.jpg And here you can see the bolt release is engaged. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/TheWhiteLion777/Photographs/SAM_0006.jpg So my questions are this. 1. Is this going to create an issue? i.e. will the bolt release every time I insert this mag and get cough on the feed lips? (don't have my upper yet to test this) 2. Am I doing something wrong when I practice mag changes/break them in? I index the front of the mag then rock it in and slam it home. 3. Am I just over thinking it so to speak? Also, look at all that polymer dust that the mags left behind. I did clean the lower when I was done. |

Push the magazine into the rifle then give it a pull to ensure it has seated. Slamming the magazine ito the rifle can jar the bolt catch and cause the bolt group to cycle & chamber a round. Sounds like a good thing, but when you force the magazine into play, you can have a failure to feed if it is not fully seated when the bolt cycles. AR15 magazines are inserted straight into the magazine well, no need to rock them into position. Indexing the magazine by placing your index finger at the front edge helps to find the magazine well easily. Without an upper attached to the lower, the magazines can be forced beyond the magazine catch. That is why the bolt catch is being pushed up by the magazine body, not the follower, in your last photo. I would save the magazine practice until you attach an upper. I can see the rear feedlips on a magazine(last photo) has been scuffed up badly, probably the source of the plastic dust in your upper. The damaged magazine may need to go back to Magpul. |

Is it just me or does the mag release seem awfully deep inside the mag well? Maybe it's just the photo. I'll look into it. It might be deep, or I think I might have been pushing it into the well to get a better picture. I know on the other side the threads are just shy of flush with the release button. |

I get mine just shy of flush and then back them off one turn. It could just be the picture. |
