Gentlemen, I badly need your help with some accessories for my issue M-16. I need a sling that will allow the rifle to hang relatively high, but allows me to shoot both right or left handed, depending which HMMWV window I have to shoot out of. The rifle is a full length M-16, no fancy M-4 carbine for this staff weenie. The sling has to fit over the IBAS and other issue stuff. What is a good cleaning kit and lube? I am leaning toward Otis for the kit. And the lube? The folks here at Ft Hood say graphite. There has to be something better than graphite for use in the desert. Thanks, and any other desert dwelling advice would be appreciated. DaveN |

I like my CQB Solutions CST sling, but I'm not totally convinced that it is exactly what you need... Contact Jeff @ CQB Solutions and he'll hook you up with exactly what you need though! As for lube I'd checkout one of the dry lubes from Brownells. They are powdered or alcohol based suspensions that'll lube up your gun without attracting dust and sand in the desert. Good luck! God bless! -Hershey |
| I concur, either the CQB CST or SOP sling should do the job. The difference is primarily in the width of the webbing, 1.25" for the CST and 1.5" for the SOP. They have a slick transition feature called a "transition release buckle" that allows you to rapidly lengthen the loop to cross over to the weak shoulder. CST, by the way, stands for cross-shoulder transition. They can be carried in the military patrol ready mode which can place it fairly high up on your chest. I have the SOP model and am very happy with it. It allows for multiple carry modes, is well made, and has many versatile mounting options. Oh, yeah - it feels good! |

CQB Solutions makes some excellent slings. However, unless you're completely ambidextrous, you may want to stick with shooting from your dominant shoulder for either window if the Humvee is doing its job and moving. We've found the cross-shoulder thing is really a skill that needs to be practiced enough to do reliably under stress, and is really best suited for using angles to your benefit when manuevering around static cover. Furthermore, if you arent issued a decent electronic optic, you've got the whole eye-dominance issue dealing with two sighting planes- bad juju. Even if you were really good at shooting from both shoulders, the last thing I'd want inside a Humvee with a full length M16 is a sling impeding my movement or getting caught on something while I try to engage out of door window. While it would be much less of an issue riding on the back of one configured as a troop carrier, if I had to ride inside, I'd consider un-assing the sling, taking up the slack in the CQB Solutions sling to make it a two point, trapping the slack with my support hand, and riding in a comfortable position with complete control of the rifle. Most people we deal with find it really comfortable trapping a 2 point sling b/t the ring and pinky finger of my support hand to take up slack, which allows you to just take up a normal support grip anywhere on the rifle with your support hand. If you need your support hand, just release the sling as you do what you need to do. If you need to sling it quick, just throw the 2 point loop over your head. When you're tasked with doing stuff outside of a vehicle, thats when the CQB Solutions 3 point sling will make its money for you, as you'll be able to go about your regular business with the gun at a safe hang (or whatever carry position the situation dictates), right in front of you where it belongs. Just our $.02! |
