I checked the MSDS for Ballistol and it contains isobutyl alcohol. The MSDS for isobutyl alcohol shows that is hazardous for contacting the skin, eyes, respiratory system, and for ingestion!!! BreakFree CLP also contains this. Whenever I spray CLP onto a surface, my skin feels funny for at least a week and not just the skin that is in contact with the CLP (I wear gloves). Propane and Butane should not cause this type of reaction (typical propellants), so it must be something else in the product that evaporates into the air rather quickly. |
| According to tests done Ballistol is 100% nontoxic to animals and should be to people. I read that they pumped the stomachs of rabbits full of the oil and after a conciderable amount of time the animals were totaly fine!!!!!! It is reguarded as that safest oil to be had. |

That still doesn't change how it contains isobutyl alcohol and this stuff is considered hazardous if you check the MSDS for the ingredients individually. According to users of Ballistol, there's a funky smell. Funky smells usually aren't found in 100% non-toxic chemicals. |

The Ballistol does not bother my picky skin.Been using it for a around the house and shop lube and as a clp on the BP and surplus guns for corrosive primers for about five years. No reactions here and it works perfectly, but I only use the liquid. In my opinion avoid the aerosol,as Ive said beofre I dont like aerosols. The aerosol, according to the MSDS I have from Klever, contains Butane,Propane and 14% Isohexane as a thinner on top of the isobutyl. The aerosols have 33.8% VOC's.Non-aerosol has 5.3% VOC's. The smell of the liquid is partly due to the alcohol content, but according to the info I have from Klever the strongest odor of,what I call "dirty sock scent",is due to the medicinal oil ingredient. The oil is called Anethole:derived from a plant called Pimpinella Anisum L. The smell is strong at first but fades within minutes and becomes very sweet odor. After about an hour no smell at all. The base lube is medicinal grade white mineral oil CAS#8042-47-5 classified class 3 by the IARC. Hope this helps Metroplex. |
1st Law of Toxicology: there are no toxic compounds, only toxic levels. Water is toxic if inhaled, causes hypoxia, asphyxiation, and eventually death. Pure isobutanol is hepatotoxic, and will kill you if you drink it in vast quantities of high concentration. Like all alcohols, I may add. If you're looking for a "non-toxic" lubricant try jojoba oil or castor oil. Excellent film strength in their natural, non-technical grades. Castor however can be toxic at high levels (ricinoleic acid) and I'm sure you can find something in jojoba that will kill an elephant at a given dose. Methinks you worry too much. |

I've developed a strong skin sensitivity to CLP and some other gun lubes. I now use Ballistol exclusively and have no problems. Isopropyl alcohol is applied regularly to skin as a disinfectant, and people habitually steep their brains in ethanol to make themselves more interesting or to make ugly women appear more attractive. I wouldn't get too hung up on the isobutyl alcohol in Ballistol, it evaporates quickly and just leaves the oil behind. Whatever I'm sensitized to in CLP does not just float away, however. Apply it to the bolt carrier a year ago + clear a jam at the range today = allergic skin reaction. Ballistol has been an answer to a prayer for me, and I have first hand experience with it being "less toxic" than other products. I wouldn't drink it like some people claim can be done, and I'll continue to wear latex gloves while cleaning, but I forsee no problems in my continuing to use this product.
