| I'm looking to change out my 16" barrel to an 10.5 or 11.5 barell on my colt upper receiver (2 years old). I know an easy solution is to buy the lenght barell of my choice and change it out. I was wondering to save money if I coould take off my existing barell and have it cut and machined to the lengh I need? If I could do that, what, if any, modifications would I need to do? Will I also run into any issues with the function of the rifle? Would I need to change any other parts with the rifle for it to cycle properly? Any help I can get with my questions I will greatly appeciate it. Thanks all.... |
| ADCO charges $65 to cut, crown and thread. If you have the ability to remove and install your barrel, having them do it is by far the cheapest route to go. Cutting your barrel under 16" and installing it requires you going the NFA route and registering your gun as a SBR. |

This is true, but I think LE can pretty much do whatever they want if it is within dept policy. He has said he is aware of the laws, so we can either assume he is LE or doesn't care about the consequences. Either way, another person pointing it out won't answer his questions. OP, I know squat about SBRs in real life, but I think if your 16" has a carbine length gas system, you should be OK with a heavier buffer (H2?). You may have to change buffer weight, if you have reliability issues and you do not have the heavier m16 style carrier, it may help as well. You won't know til you try. |
| Guys, I am LE and I'm aware of the lame sbr laws in California. Any help can't get would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the concern I know my question may look and sound easier than done, but can any machine shop do the work? Or is there regulations behind that? Again thanks for the help so for..... |
| I'm not sure if you need an FFL to do barrel work, you may not, but in any event they are going to have to cut down the barrel, rethread it, put in a new gas port of the right size etc I would want someone with some experience doing it and adco is pretty reasonable and seems to have a good turn around time, |
