For sighting-in and general training would there be any harm in running Barnaul .308 through a BOLT-ACTION 700VS? Thanks for any information you can provide. |

IMO, yes, there would be a problem. Barnaul ammo uses copper-plated [b]steel[/b] jackets, which will cause accelerated wear of your rifle. Most surplus .308, designed to be used in machineguns, also have steel jackets. You can use a magnet to confirm this. Your 700VS is a fairly high-grade match rifle, designed to be fed match ammo. Using crap ammo in it is akin to using 87 octane in a racecar that has an engine tuned for 108 octane. Sure, the car might get around the track, but it will be sputtering and underpowered, and the engine isn't going to last very long. -Troy |
