I'm at the point to order an upper receiver . I'm pretty much set on a 16'' barrel . There are a few offerings in this size though . M4, heavy or a light weight barrel , chrome lined or not . Any body has any thoughts or suggestions ?

16" barrel.  I have a feeling you want an all around rifle.  Yeah Noveske is my vote too.  Look for light barrels (SOCOM, Medium, Heavy) those are heavy barrels, forget the M4 profile (you are not going to use grenade launcher right?  Want the best look for Noveske, Kreiger, Lothar Walter.  Best Value look at white Oak, Sabre Defense.

Holy hell! Thousands upon thousands of pages discussing these variables, and he wants us to debate them all again on one thread.

I'm pretty happy with my 16" JT upper. Its a chrome lined, 1in 7 twist, 4150 M4 profile. The BCG was very nice, and so tight I had to do a dry break in. I'm a big fan of tight tolerances so this made me smile when it was extra snug. Haven't put it on a bench yet, but its a nice shooter so far.

there are lots of answers to that question.  Noveske makes apparently a good barrel, but it's kinda pricey.  Do you want a light rifle?  Go for the government profile (light under handguards)  M4 is available in both government and heavy.  Chrome lined is more durable, but has a potential for being less accurate.  chrome is easier to clean and a chrome bore and chamber may give you better reliability.

If you go for M4 or any flat top 16" make sure you get one with a F marked (taller) front sight base.  Otherwise you'll be searching for a taller front sight post and may also be having your front sight post sit taller than your protective ears on the front.  Anybody telling you there is no difference in front sight bases is blowing smoke.

To add another item to the mix, several manufacturers are now making mid length barrels that are supposed to be less harsh than a carbine gas system.  I haven't had an opportunity to compare the two side by side on the range, but a mid-length will have lower gas pressures in the carrier which translates to less wear and tear on the bolt components.

The other thing to consider is barrel twist, pretty much you're looking at 1/7 or 1/9.  There is a tendency lately to go with 1/7 because of claims it stabilizes heavier bullets better.  This brings the question of what bullets do you plan to shoot.  Both ought to do the job decently if you shoot 55 or 62 grain.  Barrels like BCM come 1/7 like the military barrels. RR uses 1/9.

I know , I know , look for a quick answer with so many options . I have an military background with FAL and UZI . Those bores were not chrome line obviously , but the way you keep your rifle/machinepistol bore clean in the army makes it look like it's chrome lined or polished haha . I think I want to stay in the "military line) so go for a normal ..maybe lightweight 16" carbine barrel . I will look at the expensive ones compared to cheaper ones . I get the idea too , that sometimes you also pay for the name !?

What do you plan to do with it?

Strictly target shooting , distances from 100 to ...500 yards . I might have to use it for an ocasional bear but , I got other options for that . Of course I know how longer he barrel the easier it is to shoot greater distances , especially with iron sights . I shot UZI upto 250 yards with a 10" inch barrel . So , you can shoot far with a short barrel . Of course your talking a better quality barrel .

light barrel chromed lined for durability.  of course for accuracy will go for something longer than 16 then maybe SS or heavy.  And for accuracy will go with 18" maybe in .308 minimum.

I should also recommend any Bravo company USA offering, as well as Daniel Defense. they both make good barrels. If you are going to order an upper I'd probably recomend a BCM.
