I'm building my first AR-15 and do not have a lot of money. My next step is to get a 16" barrel with a carbine length gas system. I'm not using this guns for any competition or anything, but I don't want a barrel that sucks and I will have to replace in a year or so. One question is: Is it okay to get the normal Stoner profiled barrel, or should I spend a little more for a Bergara, DPMS, VooDoo, or Wilson Combat barrels? (I'm not going higher end than that)
Also, does cold hammer forging really matter?

Unless you going to melt the barrel all the time you can do without CHF.  I would go with a spikes tactical M4 le barrel from AIM for $190 shipped. Cheap and worth the cash from a reputable company that cares about its customers.
