What effect does barrel contour have on performance? I understand about the idea of heat diffusion with different barrel weight, but what advantages does a heavy barrel have over a light profile barrel? Is it going to be more accurate, or is that a stupid assumption? This is also assuming that the 2 barrels are of the same quality and length. Thank you all in advance for your information. |

Quoted: Is it going to be more accurate, or is that a stupid assumption? . That's a stupid assumption [;)]. Heavier barrels have one advantage over light ones - they are heavier. This helps the practical accuracy aspect of offhand shooting, but has no effect on the intrinsic accuracy of the barrel. For a semi auto field or working gun, a light barrel is the way to go. |

The only reason that is hard to apply to AR's is that most bores are chrome plated and that generally pushes accuracy to the 1/2MOA region right off the bat regardless of profile. My brother has a M4 with KAC FF RAS and it shoots 1-1.25MOA at 100yds and my fluted dissipator with KAC FF RAS will do 1/2MOA to 3/4MOA consistently. I think the flutes only hurt the accuracy (as they are improperly added post rifleing as opposed to prior to boreing.) I have seen a few 20inch chrome bored HBARS that will do 1/2MOA or less consistently but never a M4 barrel that will do that. Get rid of the chrome lining and buy a higher quality cut rifled Stainless barrel from Krieger or Les Baer and you will probably see 1/4MOA accuracy. CASE IN POINT HOW MANY ACCURACY TEST FIXTURES AT AMMO PLANTS USE M4 PROFILE BARRELS? Most are 2inch or larger diameter bull barrels |
