My apologies if this is a repeat question.

The search function did not turn up an answer.

Bought a GPI upper. It will not line up with the Daniels Defense lower.

The lower forward portion hits the barrel nut that is tight up against the upper.

Newbee Question:
Can I shim the barrel nut forward from the upper receiver with out affecting head space etc. ???

Thanks in advance.

That is weird, you don't want to be messing around with the barrel nut.  Got a pic of what's going on?

AR-18 and IOMC,

Thanks for your interest in my problem.

The picture, if I can post it, shows the Daniels defense joined to the new GPI Upper. (Held together by hand and not secured by the pins)
It is hard to see however the mis-allignment at the pivot hole can be made out.

I just can't get the lower quite far enough forward to get the holes to line up. If I were to guess I would say they are off .010 or so.
The barrel nut is just too close for the bottom receiver to allow the pin holes to line up.

After looking at numerous video clips it appears that the free float hand guard barrel nut screws to the barrel extension.?

I am in the process of securing a receiver vice block, punches etc.
At which point I will just remove the gas tube and the barrel nut to take a closer look.

Thanks again for your opinions.

RJ

Thanks to PFran42 for posting the larger picture.

OK, Any thoughts on shimming the hand guard / barrel nut out some to permit the Lower receiver to move forward ?

Thanks again to all for your input.

Looks like its just the locking ring is screwed on too far. Try unscrewing the locking ring a ways and see if it works then.

The locking ring is too far back.

This, you have an issue, maybe more than one if you used that locking ring to tighten against the receiver or something like that.  Nothing in that barrel nut assembly should be against the front edge of the upper receiver.  If the locking ring interfered with proper torquing of the barrel nut you will need to retorque the barrel nut properly without interference from that ring.

The installation instructions are posted on the YHM web site.
You for sure need to be reading those instructions.
You need to read the TM posted on this site.
The TM has a lot of good information in it.
The only downside is the TM is written for people who have the basic skills.
There are numerous DIY videos posted these days.

You need to back off that jam nut.  When you put the free float on to the barrel nut it should get to a point where it lines up with the top rail.  then turn the jam nut so it goes into the hand guard as it "jams" the2 pieces together so they don't turn.  You should also have some set screws. To also help prevent it from turning.
This is all assuming that you first tq the barrel nut correctly.

Thanks Guys,

FWITW, I did download the 23&P. Thanks for that.

I bought the UPPER completely assembled so I can't take credit for the snafu.
Someone told me the jamb nut is probably on backwards.

As soon as I find a spanner type wrench I will back off the jamb nut.

Any suggestions on a  part number or the correct term for this tool, maybe where to find one?

Thanks again.

RJ

ps. (obviously new to AR's)

This right here, or a regular spanner wrench if you have one!

I would loan you mine if you were in Oklahoma.  Try out your HTF and see if a local can hook you up.

You can’t put the lock nut on backwards.
YHM has a combination barrel nut/lock nut tool.
I have seen them for sale at BCM and other places.

THANKS to ALL.

You are correct. The locking ring was set too far back.

This was my first rodeo at disassembling the AR.
Not having the correct tool I was just guessing.

Thanks again.
