Hey guys, I'm a noob with regard to AR's so don't flame me. I have been building my AR w/ the following parts, Spikes lower, upper, enhanced LPK, chrome BCG, milspec buffer tube assy & Vltor e-mod stock. For a barrel I am considering a WOA 13.5 w/ noveske KX3 to make 16".  I run a turbine component repair shop specializing in machining, welding, plasma spray etc. I was wondering if the flutes in a barrel like a "fluted noveske afghan" are there when the blank is forged, or if they are machined before or after the bore. I am considering taking a NIB WOA 13.5 and fluting it if possible to reduce it's weight and just for $hits and giggles. I was also curious if anyone with a Fluted Noveske Afghan could give me the the dimensions of the diameter of the barrel along with how deep and wide the flutes are. I would greatly appreciate it, I want to see if this is possible... and while I am at it maybe I'll shorten the barrel a little so that the 3.28" OAL KX3 will just past 16".

Thanks in advance for any help,
Ray

I don’t know how or when Noveske adds the flutes, but I am certain one can add them after the fact.

I just had a Bushy 11.5" barrel fluted by Adco for the same reasons you are looking to do it for. Turned out great, although a bit shallower than I thought it would have been. Originially I was looking at having it dimpled, but the flutes were cheaper and since it was going under the handguard, it didn't matter all that much. Since you have the access to a machine shop, I'd say go for the dimples. A bit more complecated, but sure are unique looking.
