Hello all,

I am having a specific quandary with my barrel nut (this is my first build). I am using the troy TRX standard barrel nut.

Right now i have the nut indexed properly for the gas system but i had to back off a full 10FT/Lbs (~40 Ft lbs torque applied). I simply can't index without going over 50 and straining and i don't want to over tighten.

The way the Troy rail works i do not think its possible for the nut to shoot loose even at this torque level because it holds the nut in place. But i don't want to put stress on that part.

If someone has experience with these i'd love to hear your opinion.

Again i went to 50ft lbs and i was not even close to the next groove to index the nut for the gas system. So i backed off and it dials in around 40 ft lbs.

thank you in advance.

The spec is 30-80 ft. lbs.

It's bad practice to back off to your index point....you always want to approach it and stop.
If you're indexed at 40# you should be fine, although I'm not sure what your rail mfr. recommends.

Two ways to manipulate your index point are to lap the receiver face with the Brownells tool and paste or to use a barrel nut shim washer (Spikes).

Make sure you are using proper grease on the threads.

If its at #40 leave it alone.  You WILL NOT get to the next notch without breaking something.  Ask me how I know.

I wish this was in the OP.
Use grease and be happy with 40#.

I've read somewhere that the best accuracy is generally noticed closer to 30 ft-lb...I guess there are so many manufacturers out there that there are plenty of different suggestions.

Weird thing is, Yankee Hill Machine and Midwest Industries both sell barrel nut wrenches that have no place to insert the driver of a torque wrench.

+1 for barrel nut shims, just ordered some from Spike's last Fri. will be here tomorrow- $9.95 for 6 of them, never over torque.
