I'm looking at re-barreling my AR with something a bit heavier that will offer more stability for long shots and allow me to see the hits in the scope.(this gun is primarily used for coyote hunting/ shooting prairie dogs)  I'm currently running a standard contour/ fluted barrel and was thinking about moving up to an 18" fluted/ heavy barrel (Mini SASS) link-> DPMS Mini SASS.  Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this style barrel and if it will do what I'm expecting or if I have to move up to a 20" heavy barrel to accomplish my goals?

Take a look at this thread.  More info than you may want to read on the DPMS Mini SASS barrel.

Thanks for the link, some great info there.  Is there much muzzle rise with a barrel in this contour? I'd like to stay away from using a brake since I'll be hunting with it.

I have never fired my 18" without a brake installed, but in my opinion  no AR's have much muzzle rise.

Check out Compass Lake Engineering or White Oak Armament, plenty of heavy profiles to choose from.
