I have a heavy barrel on my AR carbine, and I'm interested in swappin it out for a lightweight barrel.  Some folks say just buy a whole upper assembly, but I'm trying to do this as economically as possible.

First I need to find a barrel of course, but what else do I need?

Buy the complete barrel assembly.  If you already have a pinned standard FSB it can't economically be removed and installed on a stripped barrel and done correctly.  If you have a low profile gas block on your current barrel then it could be transferred onto your new stripped barrel as long as the diameters match.

Aside from the actual barrel, gas system parts and possibly a new bolt (depending on your headspace findings), you'll need:

A sturdy vice
Upper receiver vice block
Torque wrench
Barrel nut wrench
Moly grease
Headspace gauge
Some small tools, punches and parts for the gas block, gas tube and muzzle device removal and install
