I know this has been discussed before, and I have gone back and read all 23 pages of threads here but I still have some questions. I am looking to replace my RRA barrel. I am looking for an 18 inch barrel with a rifle length gas system. The number one priority here is accuracy. It needs to do better than 1 MOA out to about 500 yards. We shoot lots of varmints here in the spring and summer. All I will be shooting will be Hornady 55 gr v-maxes and spitzers, will not be shooting heavier bullets at all. Second priority is tied between weight ( this is also my out and about in the desert rifle so it needs to be as light as possible) and long life.
Right now I am looking at : Criterion 18" hybrid with the 223 wylde chamber ( been very happy with my criterion bolt gun barrels but the chrome lining on this one has me nervous as to utmost accuracy) Rainier Arms select medcon 18" with the 5.56 mm chamber ( have heard great things about these barrels, but all I will shoot will be hand loaded .223 rounds and I am wondering if the 5.56 chamber will hamper accuracy) Black Hole Weaponry 18" LTR profile with the 5.56 chamber ( again 5.56 chamber instead of the .223 wylde) I am looking to spend no more than $350, and preferably less than$300. I am looking for experience and guidance. Also, if there are any that I have missed please let me know. I appreciate your input and thanks for taking the time!! |

I think the only barrel in the $350 range that will definitely outperform the RRA barrel is one from Compass Lake Engineering turned from a Douglas blank
The ones you mentioned are a wash. They might shoot really well or they may be 1 MOA + barrels. I would also look at White Oak Armory. Their barrels are known for outstanding accuracy as well. ETA: Though I have no experience with AR performance barrels, I have seen some crazy groups shot from Harrison's 6.8 and 223 Wylde barrels. You might check them out as well |
