About how far would a 16" govt. profile barrel flex in a free-floating system perpindicular to the bore axis (up and down) at the muzzle during and after the firing of a round?
TIA for any info if anyone knows. Would like to know how much clearance I need for my gas-block inside my FF tube. |
| You mean "barrel whip"? I don't know but it probably would be quite a bit more than a HBAR. For that reason, I don't think I'd want to free float a gov't profile barrel. I think the OEM HGs would tend to dampen the vibration on a gov't profile barrel but that's just my theory. |

I dont think you will need much clearance at all, but I would be more concerned with venting heat away from the barrel. you need some empty space around the barrel to do this, while the flexing of the barrel is likely fractions of a milimeter. |

Its negligible as far as your barrel, gas block, and handguard are concerned. A low profile gas block should fit under any major railed handguard with no problems. I agree. BTW, I have a free-floated gov't profile barrel that shoots my handloads into 1"-1.5" groups (10 shots). It's more accurate/consistent now than it ever was with A2 HGs or the KAC M5 RAS that was on it. It now sports a FF RAS. -Dan |
| I'm curouis as to what you all see when torquing the muzzle end holding on to the receiver itself, observing the barrel movement in relation to a freef floated handguard. My 16" Sabre middy moves quite a bit. It has the early gov't profile (thin before FSB) rather than the current profile. |
