I asked over in the "armory" but I'll ask here as well.  Anyone ever do your own fluting?

I want to try it on a barrel but have a few questions as far as depth, number of passes on the mill (I don't want to work harden the barrel too much or warp it) and also about giving it a cryo treatment afterwards to stress relieve it.

How much weight savings could you get on an 18" heavy barrel for an AR10?  Is it worth it?

What about machining stainless steel versus chromoly steel?

i machined a 6 inch barrel out of stainless for a bond derringer and that stuff is tough to machine. use coolant and go slow. i toasted a couple of end mills on my little adventure. i read somewhere about a barrel that was fluted to deep and blew through the fluting when fired but dont remember where i read it.

I asked about the weight thing in the Adco forum, and they advised that, in their oppinion, fluting doesn't help much with reducing weight, They advised that it was more for looks, and that contouring was better for reducing weight.

Reduces cooling time too by increasing surface areas exposed to air.  But I can't imagine fluting removes enough material to make much of a difference.

Contouring for standard barrels and fluting for heavy match or precision rigs.
