I am going to start my first AR build and i have selected the ASA side charge upper, and haven't picked a lower (opinions welcomed).. but i am needing help on the barrel

since im going with the side charge, what all parts will i need for the barrel assembly? are the packages without the upper?

Is this your first AR, or just your first AR bulld?

Read read, and then read some more.  It's not difficult, but take some time to get back in the saddle..

I knew joining a forum and asking questions was the wrong choice... just trying to get some quick help...

There's always that guy on the forums I guess

What kind of rifle are you trying to build? like what are the intended purposes/applications of the rifle you're trying to build?
There is a ton of different lengths and diameters to pick from, but what is best for your intended uses may vary.

Sorry wasn't specific... just a range/coyote gun in 223

16" would be fine.. just didn't know what all was needed.. gas tube, block, nut.. not sure what else

As far as 16" goes there is plenty of options and different styles (like a M4 profile or lightweight, it will all come down to preference).
As long as you buy a reputable brand name you should be golden there.

The parts you are going to need to finish the barrel are relative to what style barrel, rail and sight / gas block combination you want.

The easiest route would be to probably just get a low profile gas block with the appropriate length gas tube (carbine or med-length most
likely with the length of barrel you have chosen) and just get a free floating rail system to go over the gas block. Make sure to find out if that
rail you have chosen uses a proprietary barrel nut or a standard barrel nut or you might find yourself missing a key part when you go to
assemble.

I'd suggest surfing YouTube for examples and ideas of how all this stuff works prior to making any real purchases, there are a plethora of
videos on YouTube of people filming their builds part by part.

He didn't mean anything, but he is right.  All I did was READ the ASA page for that upper.  There is nothing specific for that type of upper, and it is not offered in a complete upper.

You will need a barrel
You will need a gas block
You will need a barrel nut
You will need a gas tube.

You can get a barrel assembly with these items, or you can purchase them separately.  Don't forget the handguards, and muzzle device.

If you aren't set on that side charger thing, just get a complete upper in DI and help your son build out a lower.  This is a very popular method, and prices are smokin' hot right now on complete quality DI uppers.

My reason for asking is that your upper choice seems odd unless you are a pretty advanced user and appreciate that it is going to need special repair and replacement parts that are not likely to be popular or widely available.  Might have been better to go milspec type upper to get your feet wet if you have been away from the platform for a while and are making this your first actual build.  Board support or feedback is also going to be somewhat spotty.

I'm personally fascinated with the design, but not yet prepared to venture off into a build based on that type of almost unique upper.

Relax guy. There wasn't a mean word in his reply. He is giving you really good advice too. Spend a night or two reading the posts in the Build It Yourself forum on this board and then study up on that upper. That's the best way to learn.
