exactly when, if ever, is a jam nut used instead of a crush/peel washer?

Do you mean for a flash suppressor?  I've never seen one used like that before...

The only thing that comes to mind would be a muzzle device that doubled as a suppressor attachment point.
The lock nut would keep the muzzle device from coming off with the suppressor.
Probably a better method would be to pin the muzzle device.

For ARs, you would use a jam nut when you want to bring a a 14.5" barrel out to 16" for perm attach and you want to use a regular A1 or A2 flashhider...  It looks better than an extended Flashider......ESPECIALLY on a RETRO build....

With exposed threads, fugly jam nut ?
Nah, go with an A2X for that application.

Yeah, that's not bad but your "flats" (MD and JN) are going to index differently (999 times out of a thousand) and would look weird to my eye, anyway.

Peel washer between the barrel and jam nut should fix that.... Besides the older retro guns use peel washers instead of crush washers anyway.

Yeah, but then you get a parade of sh!t behind your muzzle device.
Not on my rig, YMMV.
