| If I buy a 14.5" barrel, Is it true the flash supressor will most likely be pinned? If it is pinned, Is it true i will not be able to take off the handguards and front sight/block without "unpinning" it? I am looking at a FFE upper kit. Thanks |
| the 14.5" uppers I've bought did not come with flash hiders pinned. The retailer will usually specify if they are pinned or not and will often offer the pinning service at an extra cost. It is entirely up to the consumer to know their local SBR laws so most companies don't automatically pin the FH to the 14.5" barrels. |
| It has nothing to do with "local SBR laws" it is federal law. You are correct that companies do sell 14.5" barrels without pinned flash hiders. The reputable companies will advertise that it is an NFA item and to buy accordingly. If you don't have the tax stamp then you are not in accordance with the law when you take possession of it. Also, you would need an extended flash hider not a standard one for a 14.5" barrel to be legal once it is pinned. |
Not to make a SHITSTORM out of this but you can buy any length barrel you want as long as it is over 16" (without SBR stamp) on a rifle, and the shorter than 16" barrel can either go on an AR pistol or a SBR. I have never had to prove that I own either to purchase parts. Just make sure you are within the law when assembling these parts. |
| I didn't see anything in your post that contradicted anything I said. Other than regardless of "assembly" if you have a sub 16" barrel in your possession along with even an assembled AR-15 without a tax stamp/pistol lower you can be charged with constructive intent. Meaning you can reasonably turn that gun into an SBR. Unless you were contradicting something else I said(you quoted my post) I didn't see anything wrong with what you posted. |
OK, back to the question, kinda... Not knowing too much about Fed Laws re: SBR, nor a lot about pinning, this is probably a basic question, but very timely for me, so please be kind ...Is a perm attached FH the same thing as a pinned FH? With a pinned FH, say a YHM 5C2 Phantom on a 14.5" bbl, should you be able to see the pinning? If the overall length of the barrel & FH is over 16", does a pinned/perm attached FH make OK w/o the Tax stamp? Also, as far as the questions goes about the HG, I assume that if you have a single piece rail such as the Larue, with a perm, or pinned FH, replacing them is not a small undertaking as the removal of the FH & FSB is needed to install them. Is that a correct assumption? Thx. |
| Yes, pinned FH is a permanently attached one. Now as to the question of 14.5" barrel. I haven't did anything with a 14.5" barrel but I believe most prefer "blind" pinning where nothing is seen. If that is an extended flash hider then you will probably be over the 16" and then as long as it is permanently attached you are good to go. This is one reason some companies are now making 14.7" barrels. |

Thx JBjunior. The overall length is 16" so I assume I'm fine... I also did a search on this topic and found this: Link It has most of the answers for the original question asked... |

Blind pinning refers to the type of pinning done - IE a "Blind pin" has no means of being driven out the other side (Like a pin that is driven into a barrel without a exit hole) the other method is "Cross pinning" where a hole is drilled off center though the outside diameter of the barrel (Like a AK pin) and it can be pushed out the other side to be remove. Just for reference. ~T |
