Hey guys,

Hoping a guru can help me out here as I am hard pressed to find an answer on the entire internet. I recently picked up an unfired Colt complete upper that is new in a box labelled "Colt M16A1 Upper Receiver W/ M16A2 Barrel Deluxe Conversion Kit"

Model is R0719DC.

The question is regarding the barrel markings which are:  C P 5.56 NATO 1/7

I know the "C" is Colt, and 5.56 NATO 1/7 is self evident, but what about the "P"??

I know "MP" is magnetic particle tested......but what the HELL is P?

Any help would sure be appreciated. It's a beautiful upper and it appears to be chrome lined.....should make a fine rifle.

Thanks,

Jeli

If I were to venture a guess I would say it's a "proof" mark, it's just letting you know the barrel has been proofed.

I have never seen a Colt barrel marked simply "P". Not saying that yours isn't Colt, but every Colt barrel that I've seen that was marked with a "P" had an "M" or "V" accompanying it. Example: "M VP", "VP 12", "MP 12", "C MP CHROME BORE", etc.

another great info post on Colt

The "P" is for "proof" firing.

Dude,

You rock. The upper in this thread is EXACTLY what I have. If you look at the pics in the thread you reference, you will see the OP has the same "P" mark only on his barrel as well.  Everything about the OP's upper including the label on the box is identical to what I have.

I guess it is a proof mark. It appears that this upper was maybe intended to convert an M16A1 to a Canadian C7??

Thanks for all the help everybody..
