From the looks of it, the barrel nut I've been beating on is going to need to be replaced before this barrel goes on another receiver. While I don't yet have it apart, I'm guessing that to replace the nut either the barrel extension or the FSB has to come off, and it sure seems like removing and replacing the FSB is the simpler route.

Is that correct?

Anything else I should know?

You must remove the FSB.

You cannot remove the extension.

Start soaking the FSB pins with Kroil.

Hmm..., well, it's a Colt upper, and it seems I've picked up that there's some vague convention of tapping things in from the left side. Does this mean I want to tap'em out from the right side?

I believe the FSB pins tap-out the same direction as the lower push pins - to the right (which is an easy way to remember it).

Pound on the side of the FSB pins that is the smallest in diameter.  This is usually left to right.
