Don't know where to ask so guess I will ask in here.

Is it possible to reprofile a barrel in a quality process without disturbing the crown?  I was thinking about having a barrel reprofiled but didn't want to have recrowned.

Sure, if your smith can use a steady rest or following rest.  It will take longer to cut if you specify he can't put a live center in the muzzle.

I would cut a couple inches at at time with most of the barrel starting inside the headstock behind a collet, and then pulling it out and cutting to diameter in ~2" sections.  Switch collets when I get to the area  under the handguards.
