Looking at an 18" complete upper. But what, besides looks, are the pros and cons of a "divot'ed barrel.

Your looking at  a Hardened Arms aren't you?

The only pro's that come to mind would be the slightly  reduced weight.   Someone will chime in on heat dissipation and surface area but i have no idea if it actually makes a difference when shooting or cooling.

You sir, are a fine detective! I agree with all you said, and I think in the end, it is mostly looks. But, what do I know, its why I posted.

i ordered a 10 dollar part in 2013 and get the sales emails frequently.  they have dropped 7 or 8 emails about the  new uppers with divots on the barrel in the last 2 weeks.

hope someone chimes in with more info.

Looks like a marketing tactic to me. Personally I wouldn't want it as it takes strength and rigidity away from the barrel, even if it may be minimal.

I can' t find a better picture of the barrel, but I viewed it zoomed in picasa, it appears to have been "rolled" into the barrel, not cut.
Also, most everywhere I searched, including this site, most seem to call this look as full length dimpling. It seems to be just for looks.
