So guys I think you need to enlighten me on barrel steels.  I'm building a range fun and possibly defensive rifle and was previously planning to just get a decent but nothing special 4150 steel barrel. After seeing some chrono data showing that a 16" polygonal rifled noveske will spit out mk262 about the same velocity as an 18" chrome lined barrel I'm starting to reconsider.  

I always thought stainless was more for competitors and those who needed maximum accuracy.  The velocity increase is tempting though.  I thought I had a good bookmark for this type of discussion but I can't find it.  So give a little idea of the differences between 4140, 4150, and stainless as far as how long they'll last, how heavy they'll be in similar profiles, how well they each dissipate heat, etc.
