| whats the difference between that standard bull barrel and a air guaged match hbar? |
|
You are mixing terminology here . . . there are two different questions. The difference between a bull barrel and an H-bar barrel is of course the diameter profile. The difference between an air-gauged match barrel and one that is not is really the simple fact that it was tested for bore quality. The implication however is that an air-gauged barrel has a higher quality and more consistent bore than most other barrels. An air gauge is simply a plug that is inserted into one end of the bore and slowly moved to the other end. There is also a certain amount of air pressure pumped in behind this plug. A machine measures how much air leaks by the plug as it moves from one end to the other. The more air lost, the less consistent the bore. Any barrel can be air-gauged, but it is usually only done when one is trying to prove that a particular rifle barrel is match grade. Keep in mind simply advertising "air-gauged" doesn't in itself mean anything as the barrel could of measured really shitty. The odds are though that it measured very good and as such can be classified as "match-grade". Air-gauging is most popular with bull and H-bar barrels as they are usually marketed to folks looking to optimize accuracy. Most premium barrel makers also air-gauge their blanks to help categorize their quality. |
