I finished my lower assembly and have the upper, bolt, and charger on the way.  Now I've never done this before so take it easy on me.  I found the instructions here to work perfectly to assemble the lower but I cant find anything that helps with final assembly.  I started through the sticky on assembly, but after 12 pages didnt think I would find what i was looking for.
The upper is coming partially assembled, less the bolt assembly and charging handle.  Do they simply slide in place or what?  I havent found any good tutorial on this so I guess it has to be extremely simple but would like to get some advice before the rest of the stuff gets here.

thanks

Yes they just slide together.  It's so simple but hard for me to put into words so bear with me.  With the upper receiver sitting upright and pointing away from you insert the CH into the round portion of the opening.  After it's just started in lift up until the wide part of the CH fits into the notch in the CH channel.  Push the CH forward slightly, maybe a 1/4".  Insert the bolt carrier group and slide everything forward until flush with the rear of the receiver.

Thanks for the reply!  I figured it would be obviously simple but wanted to be sure.  Once I get it all assembled, what is the best function check for the rifle as a whole?  I completed all the lower checks and its golden.  Lastly, I didnt oil or grease anything in the lower.  Are there any spots that need it?

Thanks!

Oil the hammer and trigger pivots. Lightly oil any other moving parts including inside the buffer tube.

The things I do as upper checks are cycling the bolt multiple times and while dry firing keep the trigger pulled and cycle the bolt to make sure the disconnecter is functioning.

He has the internet there are plenty of how to videos for anything he would need.  Watch enough of them and he will be fine.  I didn't have a mentor and my stuff has been GTG.  I have met a few people that were more than willing to 'help' and most of their advice was based on their opinion and more dangerous than anything I found in my research.  At least with the internet you can find as many opinions 'mentors' as you want.  BTW brownells has great how to videos.

I when was doing my frist I looked at the video series from Brownells and did it one step at a time and also followed the step by step here on the site... But if you have a laptop just tune in to the Brownells site and follow along... Whats good is you can always rewind if you didnt catch something...

This, but if you haven't attached your upper to your lower yet, then it's easier if you do it upside down because you'll see the notch where the wide part of the CH drops in before you insert the BCG.
