Ok this my be a dumb question but here goes.... Is it possible to fix a bayonet on a carbine? It has the lug and the right flash supressor but it seems like too much barrel in between. wonedering if anyone has tried this setup

16" barrels are too long on a carbine length gas system.  14.5" barrel is right with it.

A midlength gas system with a 16" barrel is the right length too.

There is someone who makes an extended handle bayonet.

Okay that is a goo question...Why the hell do manufacturers put bayonet lug on barrels that cannot use them?  My 11.5"s shipped with them

So, let me make sure I understand this. An M9 bayonet will NOT fit on my Colt 6920? Is that correct?

Sort of.

It will go on there, but the barrel ring will be way back down the barrel and will not sit on the flash hider as designed. The length from the lug to the muzzle device is the critical dimension.

yes you can but the bayonet will rattle: due to the 1.5'' extra barrel the flash hider wont be able to keep the bayonet in place.

a bayonet will work on 14.5 carbine, 16 midlenght and 20 rifle gas system

i thought that was how it would be i didnt have a bayonet on hand but thought ther was no way it could have a handle that long

1. To standardize production (at the FSB manufacturer and the rifle builder).
2. Because there are adapters out there to adapt bayos to some non standard length set ups.
3. It's another attachment point for accessories.
4. My favorite: Maybe just to piss off the states that say you can't have one...

Here's what a bayonet looks like on a 16" carbine barrel:

The bayonet ring should be in contact with the rear of the flash suppressor. Here there is just no support for the front of the bayonet.

I've thought about putting something like this on my Carbine so I 'could' use a Bayonet with it.

I'm surprised that noone makes either an 'extended' lug to replace the existing mount or a flash hider that 'comes back' over the bbl to support a Bayonet.  Either would seem to be pretty easy.

Thanks for the picture.  In combat/fighting action, that setup would certainly bend the barrel making the weapon useless.

Preban arms has the Colt Bayonet for a 16 inch barrel:

http://prebanarms.com/detail.asp?product_id=a03

They are now pricey but a good bayonet.  I got one some years back when they were under a hundred bucks.  Real nice and Colt marked.  I figured it would make a nice accessory to go with one of my Colt 6920s.  A perfect fit and locks in nice on the 16" barrel.

Because everyone wants an AR with a front sight with a lug.

For what it's worth, I put a bipod barrel mount on mine like this:

It holds the handle down pretty solidly, and eliminates rattling around. It is more difficult to get the knife off, though, as the rubber digs into the mount and makes for quite a bit of resistance.

I took this picture a couple years ago because the question is always coming up. The only value this setup has is scaring politicians.

Can anyone point me to a web site or statistic that shows how many violent crimes have been committed by the use of bayonets mounted on weapons? Just curious.

If it gets bad enough that I need a bayonet,  it won't matter how it fits!!  You will have a big@$$ club with a knife on the end.

yep, +1. under 'strange but true' the military went with the 14.5" barrel, so that the bayonet for the 20" could still be used

Sorry to rehash such an old topic.

Does this Surefire device allow us poor slobs with 16 inch carbine setups to use a standard bayonet?

Surefire Flash Hider

I am thinking about buying one because the combined cost of this plus a standard bayonet is still less than the extended handle bayonets.

Thanks!

I like bayonets and lugs as much as the next guy.

BUT - that little voice in the back of my head keeps reminding me ...

"If you're down to just your bayonet - the sit uation is already past FUBAR."

Well, I bought one and I ordered the USMC bayonet pictured in the earlier post. I will let you know if it works.

DOES NOT WORK!

The Surefire suppressor adapter is too short by just the length of the raised area circled in red in the photo below. I sincerely hope Surefire did not do this on purpose to eliminate the possibility of using this as a bayonet adapter! Since the adapter seems to be made from steel, I will take it to my gunsmith and have the raised step removed on a lathe and the adapter refinished (parkerized maybe?). I will post final pics when this all works.

Ok, my mistake. Without the crush washer the bayonet does fit onto the adapter. However, since it is timed I will need to find a thin peel washer and hope to get it right. The timing is off by about 170°.

There is a web site to track that: http://www.assaultweaponwatch.com/ but you need to read the fine print.
