The barrel was even with the hand guard.

A multi port brake completely under a rail, not a good idea.

Do you have a before pic?

Well, AR pistol owners are not the smartest breed.

Never run your rail all the way to the end of the muzzle device.

How many rounds did it take?

Pressure impulses from muzzle blast.

I would have thought this would be obvious. Guess not.
I have a 16" bbl with a 15" rail so the rail stops well short of the muzzle brake but even so I was on the look out for any signs of rail impingement for the first few rounds.

I figured that, but I wanted a story from OP. I would certainly never keep anything I care about near my muzzle device.

no, clearly that is a 7.5 inch barrel stuffed inside a 9 inch forend. would be fine with a flash can.

[#13]
What's with the broken handguard on the ground in that pic?

ETA: Please tell me it wasn't "well, the rail must've failed" so one was replaced, and it did the same thing with rail #2.

I see pics of builds like that all the time on here. Look pretty cool. It usually works out because they don't actually shoot them.

send it back as a manufacturers defect!

I saw this the other day. Even without any basic firearm knowledge basic physics says this is not a good idea. Pressure has to go somewhere

A couple of rubber bands, some duct tape, a rattle can of flat black.....GTG?

Sorry I had more info but just saw the picture and a caption about running your rail back from the muzzle.

Flip it upside down and you have a permanently deployed bipod
8/2/2016 9:25:05 PM EDT

Just use a stronger rail....

Cut the split part off and clean it up on a belt sander and paint it.

People are stupid.

I hope whoever fired that build still has their hand.  This is right up there with starting a fire with gasoline.

Stronger rail? By all means, ask the rail maker if his float will take 16,000 psi from a brake which turns the muzzle blast back onto it. Has anyone seen thin brakes made of extruded aluminum? The few CNC aluminum brakes are known to spray molten metal and have a short life, much less the carbon steel ones.

Check the blast pressure at the muzzle - scroll down to the pressure chart: http://www.sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=1093

No, you don't want to have any side ported muzzle device with exhaust that impacts the forend. At the least you blow money on a replacement and it's replacement.

If this was directed towards my quote "Use a stronger rail", lighten up. I was just posting a wise crack. I think you should focus your wisdom on the one that built that gun and not me.

A KAK can would have prevented that, seriously how is the shooters lead hand feeling now. Probably had the costa grip too.

At first I thought someone made a bipod integral to their rail.

Then I realized, they did make a bipod out of their rail.

Really? If people are commonly running their rail out past the muzzle, then I fear for our country.

That's crazy.  I bet now they are thinking "we need a even bigger brake & even longer rail"

There's no problem if it's a linear, flash can or suppressor.

I tore up a bag I was using as a rest with the blast of my brake recently..can't even imagine wrapping a rail around a brake like OP God damn.

True, but that is not what is  being discussed.

Are you trolling us op, or do you have pictures of it before.  Looking at the blast pattern on the inside of that rail, I don't believe that the rail stopped short of the brake.  Also is that another damaged rail in the bottom of the tractor bucket...

PS are you using 7.62x39 by chance?

Well then what is being discussed?  Based on the picture provided...this was clearly an ID 10T error.
