What brand{s} of bench vice should I buy? How much do I need to spend to get decent quality? Thanks!

It's hard to go wrong with a Wilton vice.  They start at about $65 and go up to $300.

I picked up a 5" bench vise at Harbor Freight, on sale for $25.99 . Weighs about 50 pounds and does everything I need it to do.

If your ONLY using it for firearm builds and dont put a lot of stress on it, HF will work just fine.

Thanks, I really have issues with cheap tools. I  want a vice with parallel jaws and no slop whe I reverse the handle.

I with you there in regard to cheap tools.  I have the Wilton 63302 6" Shop Vise.  You can get it from Amazon for about $65 bucks.  I think it's an excellent value, considering it will outlast me.  I use it for all of my gun and knife work.  If you mount it to a sturdy bench, it should serve you quite well.  I have no regrets.  It weighs about 46 pounds, so be careful when mounting it to your bench.

Thanks Mashbill! I'd never thought to look on amazon for something like that. My bench is 2x2 angle iron with a 1" thick piece of plywood on top.

????

Do you mean no backlash between the threads?
You're probably after a machinist's vise,  mucho $$$.

Thanks, A machinist vice is too much money, however I still want as little slop as possible.

Look into a vice by Ridged.

Brownells has a nice vise that is free to rotate in the horizontal plane 360 degrees without loosening an extra knob.  When you tighten the vise, it cams down and locks the rotation.  It is very nice, but quite pricey at $220.  Had to think a while before taking the plunge on this one, but I'd do it again.  I find myself positioning things in the vise so they are oriented just right for filing, etc., when with a regular vise I wouldn't bother, and just work in an uncomfortable position.
