| Whats the best barrel length for building a pistol? I just bought a Jig and Lower from www.modulusarms.com to build a pistol. Also, whats the best upper for the money? I don't have a fortune to spend but I want a quality upper. |

I've used 7.5, 10.5 and 12. I prefer the 12. This one in fact.

I chose 10.5". Still has ok velocity and fairly flat trajectory. Fits and swings great inside a vehicle, which is where people spend a lot of time.
BCM looked into it and decided they wouldn't even bother with less than 11.5" because it just wasn't something that could be guaranteed (not enough "dwell time". That's important, because god knows they would sell a shiz ton of them if they made them. I can't ever see doing a 7.5" with 5.56. I suppose the "best" length for a AR pistol depends on what you're doing. In a state you can't open/conceal carry a long gun, maybe a 20" HB pistol is the best way to go. The best AR upper for the money is the BCM blems or basic ones. They even come with a BCM auto BCG. That, plus unlike certain popular manufacturers on these forums, BCM doesn't get get 1/10 of their product back with issues. |

Learn the constraints and limitations of a the most popular barrel lengths (7", 10.5" 11.5" and 12.5") and what your wants and needs are. If you consider all of that it will make it easy to determine which barrel length is the best choice for you. |

I just bought a 7.5, it is awsome, but ballistically I know the 10.5 is better. When I look at 11.5 or 12 it just looks to damn long. There is a thresh hold where I would rather build a carbine than a pistol. |

Yes, AR pistols are legal in CA. A law was passed that will not allow you to buy them I think starting January 2015 in gun stores. I'm not certain on the date but there was a recent change in the law. After the law kicks in you can still legally make one from an 80% lower. |

Fun and portability. After building a 7" my other AR's have been completely ignored. |
