Hi all just joined

I am debating which AR to use as my base platform. My intention is to start with a 16" barreled one for plinking and varmit shooting. Additionally I am will be pruchasing a .50 Beowulf upper as well as a .45 integrally suppressed upper. I haven't decided on the 6.8 yet. The point is that it really makes sense to start with the correct base gun (lower). I was a competive shooter for several years and trigger is important so I'll probably have that upgraded. Currently I'm considering the Olympic PCR 16.
any sugestions?

Buy any stripped lower receiver of good quality and finish it with the specific parts you want.

Mega, stag, and stingers are pretty popular on here. They are the cheaper than say a colt or bushy lower. Many people run these. You can get a mega or stinger for 89$ shipped. Then around 50 or so for a parts kit. More for the national match 2 stage trigger.

I ordered a mega myself. I am really hoping it comes by friday when I go to the range. Buddy just got a new pistol and wants to give it a try. I want to shoot my AR.

Are any of the "name brand" or more expensive lowers worth the extra cash?  I'm thinking the LMT/Lauer units, in particular.

Are matched sets worthwhile?  I'm thinking Les Baer, here.

I have the good fortune to be within easy driving distance of Carrico'z ARmory.

damn, you can have a very nice lower receiver for less than $180...

buy that lower with parts installed and then the $30 collapsible stock from Sportsmansguide.com...

*scratches chin*...that gives me a great idea.

I can't come up with a reason to spend the extra money on a brand name lower. The most critical part of the lower is the pin hole placements.I'm a Colt lover, but I'll admit that they don't hold any tighter tolerances than the other brands listed so far. Baer makes a great product, but I don't thing the price is warranted for his matched set. The Megas are a nice snug fit right from the factory and their upper has a nice matching logo. You should spend that extra money when it comes to barrel, and bolt group, and fire control parts. This where diffrences in quality stand out most IMO.

I think the Stags are excellent. Actually finished better than the colts I have.

Best Lower?

1) Any that is not Cast metal of any kind (always go Forged) and
2) Any brand that is not Hesse/Vulcan and

Other than that as long as they in spec there are enough good branded lower receivers out there to make your head spin.

Purists will say ABC (Armalite, Colt & Bushmaster) but in reality the actual manufacturers of the lower receivers are the same for many "branded" receivers or rifles (for example CMT makes the lowers for many AR15 vendor "Brands" such as Bushmaster who assemble them into complete rifles, market and warrantee them.

Find one you like, post it here and you can get a reaction from members. Just remember many will be biased towards one manufacturer or another, but you can get a feel for what the general experience is with a certain Lower, and make your decision from there.

Some of the best values out there right now are Stag/Grizzly, Mega/Stinger and RRA (if you can find any in stock) they sell for around $99 or less at competitive dealers.

Half the fun is deciding what and how many to get

Mega
Stinger (Mega)
Stag (CMT)
Ameetec
RRA (CMT)
Grizzly             - All in the $80-$105 range

PWA (LMT)
Lauer (LMT)
Bushmaster            - $110 - $150 or so range

All good lowers. Personally, I'd go with one of the ones in the first catagory. You can pay more, but you don't always get more for the extra $$. Look in the Equipment Exchange.

All the above in red I have, plus a pre-Armalite Eagle Arms and an Olympic (is it wrong I have all those and no Colt or BM?).  All of them are great receivers and for the money you can't beat the Mega or Stag.  Remember Mega has the funky Gator grip on the front of the mag well.  Stag has an ugly roll mark.  RRAs are extremely hard to find (as of the beginning of Nov at least) but are great looking receivers.  Ameetecs are nice but I don't like some of the seems left after machining.  The LMT/Lauer is really nice but not significantly better than the others.  Eagle Arms (pre-Armalite) is a nice receiver with no complaints - same goes for my Olympic Arms receiver...  It almost comes down to cosmetic reasons - they are all really that close...

Spooky

I've had very good luck with Stag lowers.  I've built 5 AR's using them for myself and friends and I have had no trouble with them at all.  The finish is excellent on them as well.

Funny!  Your thread title said "BEST LOWER" yet you are considering the Worst manufacturer out there?

+1 for DPMS.  I think they are a bit more expensive then some of the really low priced ones but the finish is very nice and everything went together great on mine.

Whats your beef with the Mega lowers/ uppers?

Have you used any?  I've done plenty of builds using Megas, and they have been quite nice....

I can repost a Colt picture if it will make you feel better over there!

I know many if not all of us are biased one way or another on the different manufactures, but what's the deal with the Olympic bashing. I'm new to the AR game and am only getting one becuse after 21 years in the Army I'm kinda comfortable with it. But in any case I deffinately feel a bias tword Olympic. If there is merrit I don't want to give them my money.

Comments appreciated
