I'm going to be helping my Dad buy his first AR and I wanted to see what you guys thought.
He's looking at Les Baer Police Special but I was thinking of just building one for him. All I know at this point is that an ACOG and SOPMOD are mandatory. What would you guys use for an ideal ACOG rifle. He wants to keep it lightweight. |

What kind of shooting is your Dad going to do, and at what distances? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Mostly Bench shooting, he wants an all-around rifle. He's not the run and gun type but he would like that ability if SHTF. Has he tried out any variable optics? I mean, an ACOG is great but it sounds like you're building a rifle around one, which seems backwards to me. The optics should fit the purpose of the rifle. |

Building him one is probably a better value than the Les Baer. 16" top end (BCM or LMT)- stick with a regular length gas tube for ease of parts/ repair. BCM or LMT BCG also. LMT lower with the SOPMOD stock, DD Omega Rail is an easy install or so is the VLTOR CASV-EL (both free float the barrel). The new Colt 6940 looks very good with a rail system already built in and the BCG, CH already included but you'd have to switch the stock out for the SOPMOD (extra $200). All better value at a cheaper price i would imagine than paying for the brand name of his first choice.
ACOGs are pretty good for all around gun.TA31s are popular though on the expensive side. That TA33 looks very impressive and light weight compared to the older models. Have a TA11 and am very happy with it. A 1-4 variable with a electronic dot would be nice but very expensive for the favs. IOR Valdada has a fixed 3 x 25 tactical with an electronic dot that has gotten favorable reviews as well as a 1.1- 4 variable with electronic dot. The 3x is a few hundred cheaper than buying the ACOG and the 1-4var is approx. to it in costs. Haven't had a chance to use either but have a fixed 4x IOR with electronic dot that has very decent glass on it. Meopta also has a variable 1-4x with very favorable reviews (same company as the IOR). Would think seriously think of getting one of those for a variable if i was in the financial position to now but alas.... Just stuff i've been kicking around for my eventual next build... |

If you guys like Trijicon you may want to take a look at the variable AccuPoints. The TR24 for example is a 1-4x optic with BAC, so you have 1x for CQB and 4x when you need to reach out. I own a 3-9x AccuPoint and love it every bit as much as my ACOGs. My next optic will be a TR24, more info HERE |

Build one or find a Stag, Bushy, or even a Colt (colt may be the same price though, but I would say better quality) |
