I'm looking into getting a eotech but before I spend all the money I would like everyone's opinion on the best model to get and if possible where is the cheapest place to find one.

That is a highly subjective question without knowing what you are going to do with it. So what is the gun for?

Just get the cheap one and put it on backwards.

Gonna be pretty much for home defense but plan on doing target shooting also.

Definitely mount backwards! Faster target acquisition...

I had a eotech 512 years ago and it was alright, battery life sucked though. Honestly, i have switched to aimpoint and just leave them on all the time without having to worry about turning it on in the middle of the night or dealing with a dead battery. That being said, the 512, 517, 553, and xps are all good to go and have reasonable reviews. Basically comes down to how much you want to spend and what kind of batteries you want to run with it. With aimpoints release of the pro, i honestly don't see why anyone would buy the budget 512 anymore. Thats just me

XPS series. I have the XPS 2-0. I would recommend the XPS 2-0 or the EXPS 2/3.

XPS if you prefer co-witness. EXPS if you prefer 1/3 co-witness and a QD mount. I wouldn't bother with the 3-0 unless you are planning to mount night vision behind it.

The battery life has been better with the XPS for me than the 500 series stuff I've had. Plus I love the smaller footprint.

The XPS do they work well with magnifiers

Please leave the GD BS out of the tech forums.

EXPS.  Lower 1/3 co-witness, side buttons, QD mount, shorter length.

I don't get the whole battery life issue thing.  I've had a 512 for 8 years now and have no issues whatsoever, and I cycle rechargeable batteries.  I have never had a battery failure; hit the button, reticule comes up...BANG.

Yes. In fact the work way better with magnifiers. Because they have a smaller footprint than the regular dual AA battery Eotechs which means that they don't have to be mounted entirely or even partially on the forearm/handguards.

Just make sure the magnifier mount matches the height of whatever Eotech you choose. 1/3 vs full co-witness.

XPS or EXPS is the best eotech.  Don't get caught up in the whole battery thing anyways. I have had the same 123 battery in my xps for 2 years and I use it regularly.  But I love the small foot print on the xps better than the 500 series.  I am selling my 512 to fund another XPS.

Best EoTech would have to be an XPS3.

Best battery life, smallest amount of real estate on the rail, NV capable

I just wish I could see the reticle, fucking astigmatism

My vote goes for XPS 2-0.

Just got one for the wife's carbine....looks like a fuzzy Christmas wreath to me....but she likes hers alot.

and better than her Aimpoint Micro

The day someone invents a red dot sight with a focus ring to counter astigmatism....that will be an interesting day.

OP the best models in my opinion are the lower 1/3 co-witness model which are the Exps 2-0 or 3-0 for night vision and the 553.

The 553 has a longer battery life then the EXPS 3-0.

I put a G 33 behind a 552 and it made the reticle a lot more crisp.

517 for me.  Don't have a NV device to go behind it, AA batteries are always going to be available everywhere, and the 7mm riser allows me to keep my head in a more natural position when shooting and moving.

I have a 517 (AA battery model) and even with a BUIS, the 517 and the magnifier fit on the receiver just fine.  It all fits without tightening anything down to the rail...you just have some overhang of the battery compartment.

I usually run the BUIS off when I'm using the magnifier....that way I can move the magnifier forward or backward depending on the type of shooting I'm doing and desired eye relief.

The problem with the XPS and a magnifier is that the buttons are on the back...they're harder to reach with the unit positioned neatly in front of an FTS magnifier.

This.

I've had a 552 for years and loved it.

Just got an EXPS3-0. Truly a "Next Generation" sight, IMHO...

I have owned 10-15 EOTechs and my favorite is the XPS 3-0.  I do not really like the lower 1/3 cowitness but if you do the EXPS will do fine (even tho i think the height of it makes it look a little goofy).  The EOTech 512 and EOTech 552 are also 2 of my favorites bc they use AA batteries which makes things really simple.

Or you could get the zombie stopper
