Which flash suppressor is most effective, the origonal 3-prong, or the birdcage style?  Does the A2 effectively reduce muzzle rise with the absence of a slot on the bottom?

Phantom

Absolute best would be a sound supressor for supressing the flash.

Next would be the Vortex, followed closely by the Phantom.

Then comes the A1, A2 etc (and they are a big step down from the Phantom).

does the phantom work as a FS, as well as a muzzle comp???

thanks

The phantom is a flash suppressor.

The vortex is a little better at reducing flash, but it also rings like a friggin tuning fork. I like the Phantom.

Flash hiders are NOT comps.  There are no flash hiding comps that are used in any significatn number.  KAC is coming out with one who knows when.  Closed bottom does nto = comp no matter what the military would have you believe.

A lot of responses but nobody answered my questions.

Which is more effective, the 3-prong or birdcage style?

Birdcage.

wasn't the a2 closed on the bottom to try to eliminate as much dust being kicked up, not as a comp??

Where does the 3 prong fit?  I heard it's better than a birdcage.

Birdcage.  It does have the slots like the M-14.  I was thinking I read someplace the 3-prong was better but I don't know.  Didn't Colt and the Army go through a bunch of tests in the early years?  I sold my Black Rifle book.

I was wondering if I would get any comp type benefit from the A2 without the slot on the bottom.  I have also heard it was to keep the dust from being kicked up, again I don't know.

In the only reference to actual testing that I've seen, Tweak said:

"Tested side by side on identical barrels the 3 prong gave as much flash as the A1 and A2 and much more than the Phantom and Vortex."
