I´m thinking of getting a really good flashlight and like the surefire lights. But which one to take. By law we´re not allowed to mount lights and lasers under our weapons, but ..... So I want a flashlight I could use for more than just mount it under my AR or Mossberg 500 . It should give a lot of light ( not less than 100 lumen) and could be mounted easily. I thought of the M3 flashlight . The size is ok and maybe I can get it somewhere for a reasonable price. What do you think about the M3 and what mount can be taken when I do what I´m not allowed to? |

I feel your pain too- while lasers are legal to mount in Austria, flashlights are illegal on longguns (stupid anti-poacher laws!). The problem is that in Germany even the M3 device itself is illegal, so- facing the consequences (loss of all permits) IMHO you are better off learning to shoot a longgun with a seperate flashlight (but I guess that would be considered "combat shooting"). Ken Good has some great info on this here. However with all those ueber-heavy OA bull barrels it is even harder to do.... |
| @ Cato : why is the M3 itself illegal in Germany? It´s "just" a flashlight and I think using the legal 6 D Maglite as a baton is much more dangerous as the light. Anyway I could use a durable highpower light when I have to search car-struck deers next to the roads that are crossing my hunting area. I hate having only a candle-light like torch for that. Mounting a flashlight to a weapon could be only suitable for homeprotection. I also thought about the M2 or the A2 ( for the possibilty to use power saving LED´s) but they´re too small I think and giving not enough light. I have to reach out for 100 meters or more to find car-struck deers and boars which normaly go over a distance of 100-200 meters after the accident. In case of a injured wild pig I would love to mount a flashlight to my Mossberg - if they still are alive they come over you like an "angel of revenge" with all that pain they got and I want to be sure that they don´t suffer from their injuries ( that´s the case when I wait until daylight ) |
| The M3 is an excellent choice as an all around hand held light, although it is not cheap. The new "strike bezel" might or might not be a problem over there...I don't know about that, but it is nice for whacking bad guys in the face at close range. (Yes, it works...I have seen the results of two real, hard!, strikes and they were NOT pretty! Hah!) Mounting it on a shotgun or the AR should be do-able with a bit od ingenuity and a few parts available from guys like Brightflashlights or Grant here on the forums, but the lamp may not last long on the shotgun due to recoil. (For extended use the shotgun is better off with a "dedicated" fore end replacement light) |

Theo, I know perfectly well how great a weapon mounted flashlight is (I have an M3 on my Glock17), but don't blame me- it is just a matter of fact that the M3 is illegal in Germany. Most European hunters help themselves with very expensive light gathering/illuminated dot scopes by Swarovski, Schmidt & Bender, etc. Come over to Waffen-Online forums and you can discuss this problem/ law with other German hunters before it gets too off topic here. @ QUIB: Fun is forbidden here- you should know that!! |
Don't worry, one day we will come back and free you. |

Thanks for your informations . @ Cato : I also noticed later which mounted light you thought of- but thats not a multi-purpose light. Anyway no problem. We got some not so nice laws here in Germany which make living - as we know it ( and like it ) not easier. Waht makes me mad is: We , as hunters, have to take care of our wildlife and we have to do everything to prevent animals suffering from injuries and / or anything else- thats a law- but we´re not allowed to use the right equipment. I could write a lot about our weird laws and politicians but I think that´s off topic. Our goverment seems to be afraid that I could blind Mr. Schröder with my evil surefire befor I kick him in his balls on a political event ....... |
