I have had my ar-15 for about a year during this time I have put a measely 500 rounds of winchester ranger power point(this is due to the fact that I recieve this ammo free of charge from my uncle) thru the barrel. But I have decided to suplement the winchester with some store bought ammo. Which brands do you recommend? Should I buy surplus are commercially loaded ammo?

The best practice ammo for an AR15 is YRB.  It usually comes preloaded in 10 round and 30 round magazines.  Price is free.   Excellent shooting.  YRB is available in very limited supplies.  Generally it is good for only one trip to the shooting range, then you can never get your hands on it again!

YRP ammo is Your Range Buddy's stuff.  He'll give you a mag to shoot, then youre on your own.

just shoot wolf for practice.  its really cheap and it also allows you to practice cleaning your weapon afterward because it isnt the cleanest burning round out there.

Any Russian but HP (may ftf by stubbing the lugs). My AR that gets easy 1.5" on milspec has groups grow to 2" plus a few flyers but no other issues other than huge savings for trigger time.

Whatever is:
1) Runs reliably in *your* rifle, and
2) is cheapest

If you have lots of expendable cash, use as close to the same ammo as what you'll be carrying when things get serious. For most of us, the slight difference in felt recoil isn't going to be a huge factor, but some people are really serious about these things.

For me, Wolf, Barnaul, or whatever is cheap works fine. Whatever ammo you choose, buy a hundred rounds or so in boxes and make sure it works in your rifle. If it does, you can start ordering case quantities.

Thanks for the replys guys. I think I'll take the russian route, and see if my local academy stocks up on the stuff. I also think im gonna start saving up the rangers for my hunting and SHTF reserve.

I would reccomend one of the manny online retailers if you have a CC, or check card.  Cheaper by the case.

Ditto on what my esteemed colleague said. Barnaul at Academy is running $3/box, which comes out to $150/case. You can get it delivered to your door for no more than $120/case.
