Sorry for a novice question. I'm looking for a top tier quad rail that will cover a mid-length low profile gas block. The upper is a billet Mega. What are my options? Thanks.

If you want to go all out, get a monolithic upper. Won't get better than that.

How about the DD Lite rails? Which length do I need to cover the middy gas block? Thanks for the help.

The DD Lite rails are very solid.

You'll need at least the 10" to completely cover the mid gas block, and even that may cut it a hair short. The 12" will do the job and then some.

The gas block will be slightly exposed with the 10" DD Lite rail. You'll want to go with the 12" or 14" if you'd like it completely covered.

DD is great. I went with the DD lite 10" on my SBR and love every second of it.
But like previous posters said for a mid you could go longer.

Are you installing it yourself? Have you done this before? Do you have tools?

If you want an easy to install drop in that is still rock solid and high quality look at Centurion Arms or Daniel Defense Omega rails. The Centurion Arms mounts on a standard barrel nut while the Omega rail uses the delta ring.

The best high dollar is Daniel Defense.  If you can't afford one the Midwest Industries are really nice for half as much.

Best rail? Knight's Armament URX series.

I have not built one from parts I have compiled but I have taken quite a few apart and have got them back together. I usually let my buddy torque the barrel nut and check the headspace at his shop. Here's a 6.5 Grendel I am Cerakoting for a customer.

Another question. If I go with the Lite 12.0 how much barrel(16") will be sticking out the front? Thanks.

I'm also somewhat of a newb when it comes to AR-15 builds.  Not a newb to the family of rifles since I carried an M-16A2 in the Marines, but I didn't get much of a chance to accessorize that one.
Anyway, for my recent and first build I got the Daniel Defense 12" RIS II rail for my 14.5" (with pinned A2X), mid-length.  It's truly a work of art.  If I could do it over, though, I'd go with the Lite rail instead.  The RIS II has a removable bottom rail so you can take it out and free-float a M203 grenade launcher.  Cool feature, but as much as I'd like to I don't see myself acquiring a 203.  The feature is just added weight and complexity (and initial cost) to me.
The Lite rail is based on the RIS II, but without the 203 attachment design.  I haven't looked at the specs or price, but I would imagine that the Lite is a bit lighter and a bit less expensive than the RIS II.

As far as the length of the barrel outside of the rail goes, mine is a 14.5 with the BCM A2X flash supressor for a total "barrel" length of about 16.1".  The end of the A2X is right about 3.5" from the end of the rail.

DD Lite Rail 14" or 12" for a midlength.  Done.

what do you want to do?

Looks-then it doesn't matter.

Function then what-flashlight,nvg, vfg/afg/etc

ETA quad rails suck balls, they are limited in where you put stuff and are heavier than non quads. I reccomend a lw troy/vtac/mi where you put rails where they are needed

If you are not going to hang shit off of it, then dont get one

There is no question a DD lite rail is top notch.  I really love the one I have.  Super solid and top quality.  But that also comes with a price tag to match =D  Wish I could afford to put them on all my AR's, but the Samson and MI rails (the gen 2 version) I have are also very nice.

When my DD Lite Rail got oversold at BCM, I substituted a Centurion C4, because I was lazy and didn't want to look around any longer.  No regrets, it's a nice quad FF and the price was great

Like Taylor said, you want to go lighter and more versatile, get a tube.  I have the Apex on a midlength.  I think the Apex is the best looking of all the new style versatile tube type floaters.  Just my opinion.

Did the exact same thing... I honestly don't like the look of the new DD lites (huge fan of the Gen 1s) and they were sold out at BCM so I went with the Centurion.  It was cheaper, the install was a hell of a lot easier, and I am really happy with the quality.  You do install the Centurion directly to a factory barrel nut and you need to watch out removing the barrel nut and re-installing the same one bc it will never be on there the same.  To prevent having to buy a new barrel nut and deal with all of that, I simply cut the delta ring off and installed straight over the original so i didn't ever have to undo the factory install.

My DD RIS II is still what i prefer when it comes to look and quality but the price ain't right on that thing 4sure

i agree that DD is excellent; i'd also look at Centurion. they're a bit less expensive than the DD, and are of EXCELLENT quality.
