Will be for a Marlin 336   30-30.

Main use:  occasional hunting, longest shot prolly 75 yards.

Should I go fixed or variable power?

Thx.

Yep. For a .30-30, it'd be tough to beat that one.

I've never used one, but this scope seems to be popular. However, I'm not sure if it is $100. The place I usually buy (SWFA) lists it for $170.

At $100, I'd use irons or buy a Primary Arms Micro dot to use until I saved up enough to try a Weaver or get a Zeiss Conquest.

If you look around you can find it for less.

$100 even is going to be tough for anything that is not a complete POS.

Buy an older Weaver or Redfield.  You can find them for 100 bucks, and I'd recommend that over anything that comes NIB at that price.

Either a weaver or primary arms scope will do good.

I have a Simmons 3-9 that is a mighty fine little piece.

It was about 110 I think.

Call the Bushnell Factory Outlet stores in Kansas (913 310-0783) or Missouri (816 525-2200), tell them your budget and ask what they have in stock.  Either store will check both stores inventories.  Very nice, very helpful people.

This is the best answer I've seen here so far.  Do some reading and research then start hitting the pawn shops and you will find something of fair quality for your 100 bucks.

I'd save a little more money... it's gonna be tough to find
something that is not a pos at that price point.

I just called.  Very nice, and very helpful.  They do not have a website.  Was quoted $120 + around $10 shipping for a TRS-25.  Kinda defeats the purpose of an "outlet" store when the price is 60% over retail.

I don't know if that was a refurbished item, or if they actually carry refurbished items at the outlet.  It does have an electronic components to it, so I have to assume there is a certain amount of defects that have to go back, and I know they don't just trash them... so?  I did find a few online places that sell Bushnell refurbished products, but did not compare prices vs. new items, but did not find any refurbished TRS-25's advertised anywhere.

Read the FAQ 6 and head for Walmart.  Centerpoint made by Leapers for Crossman sold by Walmart has solid reputation.

SWFA.com is blowing out various versions of Sightron SI 3-9x40 scope for $99.95.

At their original price, I would tell you to get the Redfield, but for ~$100, this is one to jump on. Limited to stock on hand.

I'd go with a fixed 4x for that application.  The Bushnell Trophy scopes are decent but not completely optically honest around the edges of the field of view.  Probably not enough to matter for your friend's intended use.

The Weavers are fine too.  In my experience the older Redfields tend to look yellowish. They are built like tanks and weigh as much.

Well, rats.  I should have been more specific.  You're absolutely right.  They do price factory new items at prices that can be beaten just about anyplace.  I don't know why.  But, they also always have an ever-changing selection of refurbished scopes in plain white boxes at very good prices.  The OP was looking for a scope under $100 for a Marlin 336.  If you call those guys and tell them all that, I don't think they'll try to sell you a new TRS-25.  I'm thinking a refurbished 3-9x40 Trophy can almost certainly be had for less than $100 delivered.  Probably some other options too.

Plus if it craps out you can take it in and exchange it. I've been pretty happy with mine, though I don't use it anymore.
