I just put together my first stripped AR lower, an Armalite, using an RRA LPK. For the upper I had an extra early 1990s era Colt HBAR upper I was going to attach to the lower.
The problem is that I guess the upper is what is referred to as a "big screw" in that the hole for the front takedown pin is much larger then takedown pin. When mounted I have tremendous up/down play in the front as can be expected. I have searched Brownell's, etc looking to see if anyone makes a shim/reducer of some sort that can be placed in the uppers front takedown pivot to reduce the size of this hole and allow the upper to be solidly mounted to the lower. If anyone can help out by pointing out a part, someone who makes such a part, etc this would be extremely helpful. Thanks! |
You didn't look hard enough at the Brownells site
They list a DPMS piece which will sleeve a big hole upper. Obviously, you can also get it from DPMS, which I'd recommend, since Brownells has minimum shipping chge, and DPMS will only charge you what it costs. I't's a steel sleeve with an offset 1/4 inch hole. To mount it start w/the thinner side more or less straight up . I coat the outside with a good quality epoxy base putty , Put the upper onto the lower you want to use, and check the front to rear gap of the two pieces. If they're even all the way, fine; but usually you'll have to rotate the sleeve a tad forward or back to get the upper even front to rear. Good luck.
