Hi I am looking to put a bipod on my ar 15 and at my local bass pro they have Caldwell and Blackhawk. Would one be better than the other or is there another brand I should be looking at? I am looking at the 6 to 9 and also the swivel model.

When it comes to bipods Harris is the name to know. This won't be popular with some, but I actually really like the simple Gripods, just make sure you get a real one. They work well for me and my needs.

Buy Harris and buy the swivel model. You can thank me later

Yup. I have a harris on several rifles but use a grip pod on my main AR. I know how so many people hate them but I find them to be so versatile. And the come off quickly if you are in a situation where weight is an issue, but for most of us it usually isn't.

The Caldwell/UTG/Blackhawk/Champion are all exactly the same I'm pretty sure.  They work fine for most uses but if you're going to be throwing your gun over cliffs and down driveways you should probably step up to a Harris or Atlas

Harris SBRM 6-9" bipod with a Kmw Podloc and a qd adapter of your choice.

Also consider an Atlas if that meets your needs.

I have and use both.

Ok thanks for the input. I was hoping to keep it  as close to 100 as possible. I know Harris run a little more than that.

Take a look at this one: http://www.amazon.com/BlackHawk-Sportster-Adjustable-Bipod-Traverse/dp/B00PLAHTZI

It has pivot and traverse, which isn't offered by any other models as far as I know.  It also already had a built in lever for locking down the movement.  No need to buy anything extra like Harris

If all you are doing is plinking/casual shooting this will work fine.

They're actually under $100, unless they have gone up. Regardless, I would definitely go with Harris over any of those cheap brands sold at big box stores. I have had those break on me before. Never a Harris though.

This is the best one I have ever used on an AR. Harris Bipod BRM-S and LT706 QD Swivel Mount Combo.

Check it out

I have a few Harris.  They're great.   My buddy has a Caldwell 6-9 that I've played around with quite a bit.   It's pretty nice and I'm sure would fit my needs just fine.

I have a Harris and also a Blackhawk.
The Harris is obviously nicer and has some good features.

The Blackhawk actually works damn well, the only real negative is it being made by commies and the lack of leg notches.

I started with a Harris knockoff by Caldwell, but found the little sling stud to be insufficient as an attachment point.  So I switched to a heavy but otherwise excellent model from UTG that attaches to a short section of Picatinny rail - rock solid. - CW

I posted a thread just like this a few days ago and have looked at a lot of videos and reviews since. Think I am going to go with 3 different models. For cheap a UTG, They are now around $30. Also going to get an Alas and a GG&G but both of those are around $200. Have had Harris bipods in the past and they are good but I don't like the look of the external springs or the noise make when the spring loaded legs extent.

Like the Nutnfancy fellow said, UTG makes a wide variety of shooting accessories, ranging from pure crap to very good.  Just because its Made in China, doesn't mean shoddy quality.  At the upper end, UTG bipod prices are a fraction of what you would pay for an Atlas, GG&G or even a Harris.  Whichever bipod one might be attracted to, IMO the Picatinny attachment method is far superior to the sling stud. - CW

I just ordered a Harris S-BRM for $88 (on sale) at midway, I would grab that deal if I were you.

I have the Caldwell sitting bipod (14-30") on mine and have had zero issues with it. Its on a gun that's used and abused hunting and its held up well. If you plink at the range, I see no point in spending big bucks on a Harris, just to say you did, but thats just me. If its a competition gun or something that will take some abuse, spend the extra money.
